after spending a lot of time with other distributions (debian, gentoo, mandrake, redhat, fedora, slackware) and even FreeBSD I think that I finally found the distribution I was looking for.
fast
easy to use package manager (but with depencies)
up to date
and I hope stable (I only run arch linux for 1 Day now, so I can't tell)

andreasw,
Nice to hear from you Andy. That was a darn good summation.
Yes, Arch has an appealing balance of characteristics. Lean, quick, easy to configure and update, and a top notch package manager. It's been stable for me on three workstations and a webserver.
Welcome!

Soon, you will also discover the power of ABS and makepkg :-) Use it wisely 8)

I will try out abs soon, because I have to rebuild sim-icq, it looks like the ports system of FreeBSD
Andy
EDIT: It also uses cvsup to keep up to date, like the FreeBSD ports collection

andreasw,
Yes, all you have to do is to make sure that cvsup is installed and run abs. If you run into trouble, I'd suspect /etc/pacman.conf first. You may need to uncomment at least "current" and "extra" and all the Server = lines below them, but that would be unusual. After that, change directory appropriately and run makepkg -bci or some varient thereof. If you want to set optimization flags, do so in /etc/makepkg.conf and if you'd like to edit the colors used by the makepkg program do so in /usr/bin/makepkg.

hi,
jlowell thank you for your help. I just created my own auctex package, with a simple after install script, when I have tested it I will upload it in incoming. The next package will be preview-latex
It is really easy to build packages if you have read the manual packes and look at some existing PKGBUILD files.
Ok auctex isn't much a problem compiling, But I think it is very nice for editing latex with emacs.

Arch is my third, and probably final, distro. I hear you 100%
And yes, ABS is lovely. ABS/Pacman are exactly what I had in mind for my ideal packaging system. Not too controlling or complex and just enough so that anything can be packaged with enough time. I'm creating a GNUstep repository right now; I wouldn't have been able to do that on many other distros without wasting a lot of time swearing at various package managers.
Arch 4 lyfe

Well, I've been using Arch for about a couple of weeks now. My dream distro was always the simplicity of Slackware with real dependency support like Debian's. And guess what, that's Arch. I'm very pleased with it and I don't think I'll switch, at least not any time soon.
I still don't know how to use ABS though, I wonder what its like.

Hi,
I also found arch my final distro.
My first try was Slackware96, I was shocked because there was no "nice" GUI. After that SUSE, but there was no easy way to install new kernels and new packages because I had no cable modem, of course Redhat, Mandrake, Debian ( I HATE dselect ), etc. Gentoo ( emerge is quite nice ), but I don´t want to compile my own distro and have to wait weeks to get it fully working.
I searched and finally found THE article on osnews.com and I have to say arch is the best distro I have found. I was able to compile my own OOO in German, ( sorry for uploading it to incoming  wthout properly packaged). It is simply nice.
Thanks for this great distro

After trying out almost all the available distributions, I have to agree that Arch is the best. True, it has not many packages like Gentoo has, but I hope it will get better over time.
I am looking for the amule package. Any one got them?

i am not completely sure as i am too lazy to look at the moment but i think there is one in one of the TURs (trusted user repos)
AKA uknowme
I am not your friend

same for me : after having tried a lot of distros out there, Arch is the home I was looking for

There has been an amule package in the turs for a while, but the turs have been having issues working with a lot of the packages lately. Right now we are moving to a new system and hopefully it will work a lot better than the old one. At the very least, you can grab the PKGBUILD and just build it on your own if pacman doesn't let you install it from the tur.
