Which programs do you use?

Before I came to Arch Linux I was used to have a lot of programs for every possibility by using SuSE with KDE.
Now I'm still not sure if I will use Enlightenment, Fluxbox or XFce for the future. However, these don't have any progs shipped with them - e.g. in XFce I can only use XFtree, Xterm and I added Opera and X-Chat.
Here a list of programs I'm planing to use:

Opera Browser
X-Chat
Mozilla Thunderbird
Xmms
OpenOffice

I still need a filebrowser. Which would you recommend. Are there any other must-have programms for normal Destop usage I might have forgotten?

Re: Which programs do you use?

you mean you never used anything outside of what was included in kde? wow you have not used alot of really nice stuff. some console some gui. whe i used kde (a long long time ago) i did not like a single solitary app included with konsole was slow and bloated, konquerer was god awfully buggy,  and the list goes on.

myself i now use mostly console or curses apps. they just work better and outside of X. the only heavy app i use is firefox (because it  seems to be less process hungry than moz and is more stable than anything else, i used opera for about two week once, liked it at first but it was never stable so i stopped)

irc-> irssi (xchat is too --- screen consumptive and mouse driven)
mail -> sylpheed (light and very configurable)
music -> audio cds -> cdcd
               ogg/mp3 -> mp3blaster
Office Suite -> none i just keep lots of editors around
File Manager -> mc, emelfm, gentoo (mostly mc)
Multimedia (video) -> lots (mplayer, ogle, xine, vlc, avifile)
Browser  -> firefox, dillo (also a good file browser) and links/lynxs

Re: Which programs do you use?

No, I did't use only KDE programs, but many of them - and that's why I "miss" now a lot of programs. But thank you for your list :-)

As webbrowser I still use Opera - I don't know why, but I like it more than Mozilla. I use Opera even in Windows.
Sylpheed is a mail client I used a long time with SuSE because I didn't like kMail. But then I found Thunderbird for Windows and that's why I like to use it also in Linux.

As filemanager I like your suggested emelfm, it's pretty simple and does what I expect of a file manager :-)

I installed cdcd but I don't where my cd-rom is - suggested was /dev/cdrom, but that's wrong.
And all my mp3's are on my windows partition and I don't know how to get to there

Re: Which programs do you use?

your cdrom will likely be /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 .

Re: Which programs do you use?

you will have to mount your windows partition to reach your mp3s.  using the "mount" command.  But be careful as different filesystems (NTFS) don't play well with linux yet.

Re: Which programs do you use?

for god sake why kde ? its ugly, slow, windows like, if you want a windows like desktop, go use gnome, at least you can bind more things in the keyboard, and also, the free port of QT its just a SHIT.

blackbox + bbkeys + bbconf
gkrellm2 + lm_sensors
aterm for everything !
gnomeicu for icq
amsn for msn
mozilla-firefox ( epiphany sux, and mozilla well, hahaha mozilla.... )
evolution ( thunderbird and sylpheed sux in imap , sylpheed even crashes)
rhythmbox + easytag
mplayer for video and stuff ( great project )
Bitchx for irc ( if plan to run xchat, run mIRC in wine instead ( but its not free! so DONT use ), the only good irc gui client in my opinion is mIRC. )
Ggv for pdf and stuff
OpenOffice as office suite
abiword is nice too, but has a poor support for my language.
BE open-source-minded never install closed source apps smile

learn how to use blackbox and bbkeys effectly and you will have the best and fastest desktop, bind everything in keyboard, try to not use the mouse.
thats my advice smile

Re: Which programs do you use?

Hm, I'll give Blackbox a try, although I don't see a difference between fluxbox, blackbox, openbox and so on.
In a few weeks I will know which WM fits best my needs.  smile
And could you tell me whats the name of the program which shows the time, CPU usage etc. ?

Re: Which programs do you use?

fluxbox with gkrellm (i love gkrellm, it's so cool!). i've tried out a LOT of window managers, but i've found fluxbox the best (question of taste i guess). i don't like gnome/kde, since they're slow and bloated, plus i feel it keeps me from getting out the most from linux. from gnome/kde, i only got the kdelibs installed, but only for k3b and quanta (mostly k3b). i recommend every kde/gnome user to check out some window manager (xfce is somewhere half way between a wm and a desktop environment)

apps in my fluxbox menu

mozilla
xterm
emelfm
licq
xchat
downloaderx
gftp
nicotine (for downloading music)
lmule (slow network though)
xmms
mplayer
nano
quanta (html editor)
k3b
gimp
gqview
xscreensaver
opeoffice
acroread
unreal tournament

Re: Which programs do you use?

I have to say that rox has come quite a way for a great simple file manager.  I suppose my personal favorite is Xfe, but it's not in the official repositories.

Thanks,

KDE3.2 is actually faster than Gnome2.4. And I'm almost certain you've never even tried to use KDE since version 3 seriously. I you had, you would have know you can set up a key combo for almost every single action in KDE.

If you are open-source-minded you will never install closed source apps, yes, that's undeniable. But if you were open-minded you would have recognised some software just will never be open-source. Some enterprises, like nVidia, just don't want to give away their techniques to ATI, in which they've put a lot of money. Opensourcing their drivers would provide ATI with a tremendous advantage.
