Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

Hello,

First I will describe my setup:
I have a xen 4.8.2-4 with a centos 7 dom0

I have an arch domU whith a vnc (virtual graphic card) and PCI passthrough for an AMD radeon PRO WX 4100 graphics card.

- The arch kernel version is 4.15.7-1-ARCH. (Last AMDGPU DC update should be included as it was added to kernel 4.15)
- My desktop environment is LXDE.
- My video card is detected and kernel module loaded

lspci -v

- For info: the video card output is mini diplay port so for compatiblity with my screen I have a mini display port to HDMI adaptater called Rankie

- My card is detected by xrandr

xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x7a cap: 0x0 crtcs: 1 outputs: 1 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting
Provider 1: id: 0x48 cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 5 outputs: 4 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting

- xrandr detects the virtual card and I have a display via vnc

So my issue is that when I connect my monitor to the video card via the mini display port to HDMI adapter, I have a black screen. I cannot detect it with xrandr even though the driver is loader and kernel should have DC for the given card.
I have now no idea what to do next, please could someone help me?

Hope I provided enough details.

Thanks in advance for your time and ideas.

Best regards,

Re: Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

I think it would be sane to check also for your xorg log, mkinitcpio.conf and `dmesg | grep drm`.

Re: Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

Thanks for your answer. Sorry to respond with so much delay, had rough past weeks^^

So to answer you, here is the data requested (I don't know how to put the content in a way it can be reduced to not create a giant post so I put it in a pastebin):

Result to `dmesg | grep drm`
*deleted*

Xorg log
*deleted*

mkinitcpio.conf content
*deleted*

Tried to quickly spot any issue but to be honest I dot not have enough experience on the subject to find it like that.

Thanks,

@Slithery Ok, thanks for the advice and the Pastebin clients part is a nice tip smile

# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
MODULES=()

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=()

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the

# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect block filesystems)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS=(base udev block filesystems)
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
# HOOKS=(base udev block lvm2 filesystems)

Re: Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

Have you tried adding

amdgpu.dc=0

to your grub / kernel command line?

I have a AMD R380 at work, and my grub defaults to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1 amdgpu.dc=0 scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=y dm_mod.use_blk_mq=y"

I was having a lot of trouble with 4.15 before finding this flag somewhere here in the forums wink

EDIT:

Found my solution here.

Re: Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

#vltr Thanks for the tip, I will try but I doubt it will help a lot as it seems to be detected and not cause much problem on the kernel side. Furthermore, I just thought about the fact that due to my graphics card version I MUST use amdgpu DC or otherwise I need to use AMDGPU PRO driver which I absolutely do not want to have. So if it is the problem I am a bit stuck...

Otherwise I continued to work and research on the subject and I found several things.

First stupid things, I forgot to install appropriate Xorg drivers... So I installed x86-video-amdgpu and also x86-video-ati which should be useless. Intalling it changed Xorg logfile which now looks like the following:

When I used the Xorg.conf generated file, I successfully displayed something on the screen. The issue was that

  • I was unable to move windows between screen

  • I had a cross as cursor on the graphics card's screen

  • I had a static configuration unable to use xrandr

What I want to have:

  • Being able to move windows between screens

  • Being able to dynamically change xorg configuration as I would like to be able to provision the graphics card on the fly

  • Having vnc screen and physical screen to have the same desktop in extended or duplicate mode

  • In no way limit the graphics card capability to handle 4 physical screen while still being able to have at least one vnc connection

While documenting myself on the subject of Xorg, graphical display on linux and multi GPU setup, I found that multi GPU setup for Linux is an intricate subject and I think that the issue might be in this direction but I still do not have enough knowledge on the subject and thus still require your help for either advancing on what I identified or completely reassess the issue.

I hope that someone will be able to help.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

Oh, sorry, now I understood your question. Have this setup worked before? If so, what have changed to get here?

Re: Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

The only time I ever had something displayed on the screen was as I describe in my later post. In general, this is a new setup for me and is a bit exotic due to its particular configuration and variety of technologies involved (xen, iommu, centos, arch, etc) on a fairly new hardware (Ryzen, AMD Radeon WX PRO, etc).
So it is a start for me and one of the goal is to use it (at least with arch dom) as a high end desktop rig for productivity, entertainment and whatever you could think of.

Re: Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

post full lspci -k please so we can see what hardware the kernel sees.

Does the monitor work with the mini-dp > hdmi adapter when used by centos or a live distro that uses X ?

Can you try booting the arch vm with only the amd card (and no xorg config files) ?
If nothing on screen, perhaps you can access the vm from xen or centos host.
full dmesg and xorg logs from such a boot would be helpful.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Display Monitor detection issue - AMDGPU - xrandr

Supsupname: well, this is way over my head I guess, I don't know how I can help you (with effectiveness), but I can give it a try wink

First of all, I don't know if you'll be able to switch screens dynamically with xrandr, but I may (and hope to) be wrong (since I've seen some weird, loose configurations from X (via xorg.conf) being recognizable by xrandr). So, the first question is: are you able to configure and use all the screens you want - even if you have a crosshair and without moving windows around?

2. Is your Arch machine detecting AMDGPU? If so, you might want to add it to your mkinitcpio MODULES section, blacklist radeon and etc - as specified in the amdgpu wiki.

If everything works nicely until this point, then we can continue moving to other topics of your request - it might be hard for me to follow since I don't have this kind of setup anywhere near me. And I don't want to frustrate anyone if my help is not effective or welcome.

Anyway, what Lone_Wolf has asked is also valid to get going smile
