Gnome 2.38 Multiple Monitor, only one will re-draw

Gnome 3.28 installed last evening. I have only the user-themes extension enabled. I have for many months been using gdm/gnome-shell with wayland and have not had issues.

I'm on a T470s, ultradock, and have two monitors connected via display port.

When rebooting after the 3.28 install, can only see the GDM background on one of my monitors (the rightmost in the configuration). I see the last stages of the booting process (systemd initramfs) on the other two screens (laptop and left monitor). The mouse cursor is active on all three screens, I can wave it across all of them. It just appears that the left two monitors will not re-draw to show me anything other than the last terminal state (end of boot).

I am able to login by hitting enter and typing my password (I am the only user on the system/list). This re-draws the right-most screen, leaving the left two unchanged. I am using a scaling factor of 1 in gnome, so my cursor re-draws and is again movable on all three screens, even though I'm still seeing the final stages of the boot process on the left two.

If I undock my laptop screen will suddenly re-draw and become usable (I'm typing on it now), if I re-dock the left two screens show me the end of the boot process again.

I am perplexed, hopefully I've explained it well enough above.

Re: Gnome 2.38 Multiple Monitor, only one will re-draw

This apparently is only manifesting when I use wayland for gnome-shell. Either way GDM is on wayland so if I am docked I will only have display drawn on the rightmost monitor, but if I switch gnome-shell to xorg mode then at-least gnome-shell will work.

So there is some form of regression between gnome 3.28 and wayland.

Re: Gnome 2.38 Multiple Monitor, only one will re-draw

I can confirm this with a Dell laptop and an external monitor. Plugging in the monitor on wayland (GDM or Shell) will crash the system for me. I described this in a little more detail here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p1776392
So far, I have found no solution to this (except a rollback, of course). I will stay on Xorg for the time being, but hope this will be resolved quickly. Have you seen any bug reports on this?

Edit: I have removed the nvidia modules from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (early KMS), now I have the exact same problem as you (gdm & gnome-wayland session only on second monitor).
Edit 2: Interesting. After another restart, I'm back at the behaviour from before (unable to start gdm/wayland session with second monitor plugged in).

I have the same problem with a XPS 9360 (Intel graphics only).  After upgrading, Wayland gnome-shell freezes if booting with external display (Dell 27" 4k) attached or if plugging it in afterwards.  I removed all extensions and tried again with the same result, so like you I've rolled back.   I didn't bother trying with Xorg.

Re: Gnome 2.38 Multiple Monitor, only one will re-draw

I've moved entirely back to xorg via disabling the `#WaylandEnable=false` comment in `/etc/gdm/custom.conf`. This seems to work fine for me.

I even have the exact same display. You think that's a coincidence? The log in the post linked in my previous post would suggest otherwise.

This is my solution as well for the time being. Thanks.

The displays are not a coincidence. I've tried it on multiple docks with multiple monitors. Wayland is puking on itself.

I've seen various messages elsewhere that it might be related to the 4k/HiDPI-ness of the monitor: https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … 4k-monitor

I'm using 1080/1440/2560 displays, all behave the same incorrect way on wayland.

Re: Gnome 2.38 Multiple Monitor, only one will re-draw

Hi,

also can confirm the exact same problem on my Dell Precision 5520 (just using Intel Graphics). On xorg everything works well. Wayland either renders only one screen or crashes/freezes completely.

Best, Dan

Re: Gnome 2.38 Multiple Monitor, only one will re-draw

Has anyone been able to find or file a bug on the gnome bugtracker for this?  I can't find any interesting information in the journal when looking at `journalctl -r -b -1` after a crash.

Re: Gnome 2.38 Multiple Monitor, only one will re-draw

I am having the exact opposite issue on ubuntu Gnome 3.32, wayland is the only one that works, xorg has the no rerender issue: redacted
