I installed virtualbox two weeks ago, along with associated kernel modules. Both the guest and host OSs didn't work as smoothly as one would like. However, when I turned off the guest OS, Arch would still stutter. Notably, the Google Chrome window freezes regularly, especially while scrolling, playing videos, or rendering web animation. A mouse click or keyboard input makes it resume the latest state of the screen. Other things I've noticed are slower installs, problems with copying and pasting large amounts of text (> 10 MB), and slow rendering of window animations.
I've removed virtualbox and the kernel modules, upgraded all packages, and restarted the computer, but the problem persists.

Do you have your stuff set up in a way that the nvidia GPU is doing the graphics on the laptop's screen? If yes, there's problems right now with the newest nvidia drivers and Chrome. Try switching to Chromium in the Arch repos as that one has a patch applied to it, or wait until Google releases the next version of Chrome with hopefully that same patch applied.

I'm pretty sure that the screen is handled by integrated graphics. I tried Chromium just be sure... same problems.
