No display to second monitor, but it is detected (AMD R9 380) (i3wm)

Hello, im having an issue that i cannot seem to find any information on, and would appreciate help. Also,
forgive me as i am fairly new to arch and the forum.

I am currently running i3wm on a pretty fresh installation of arch linux with the xf86-video-amdgpu driver
installed. My graphics card is an AMD Radeon r9 380.

I have two monitors, both 1920x1080, plugged into the HDMI and the DVI ports on the Graphics card. The multimonitor setup works in the BIOS of my PC and windows so there is no hardware issue.

The monitor plugged into the DVI port is receiving no signal whatsoever even though xrandr recognises it and seems to be telling me that it is outputting to it.

$ xrandr

   720x400       70.08

All the information here seems to be correct, in terms of resolution, refresh rate, and relative position. But the monitor detected under DVI-D-0 still recieves no signal. Upon startup, I have i3 configured to:

workspace 1 output HDMI-A-0
workspace 2 output DVI-D-0

exec xrandr --output HDMI-A-0 --auto --left-of DVI-D-0

which appears to be what it does, but again, no visable output to DVI-D-0. The output to this monitor works in BIOS and grub but once linux has started it stops.

here is what is in ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log:

I do not currently have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf in place. When I tried to run "X -configure" as a possible step towards a solution it segfaulted. That leads me to think that there may be a driver issue but what do I know. From that point, I'm at a loss.

Am I missing something obvious? I cant seem to find any other posts about a situation like this. Usually if one is not getting output to a screen it isnt detected or configured properly but in this case it seems to be - does anyone know what to do here? If I left out any relevant information let me know ill reply as soon as I can.

Re: No display to second monitor, but it is detected (AMD R9 380) (i3wm)

exec xrandr --output HDMI-A-0 --auto --left-of DVI-D-0
man exec wrote:

If exec is specified with command, it shall replace the shell with command without creating a new process.

I have no idea how well xrandr functions as shell, but it's definitely not designed for that job.
remove exec from the xrandr line, then try again.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: No display to second monitor, but it is detected (AMD R9 380) (i3wm)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I just tried it and a configuration error occured - executing xrandr with exec is how ive done it in the past - and commenting out the line altogether didnt help either. I think I forgot to mention that that command is being executed from ~/.config/i3/config. Also, because the second monitor stops working seemingly before x starts (and after grub and initial bootup stuff, so once the login prompt shows up is when the other monitor stops receiveing the signal,) I do not think that the issue has to do with the window manager, and its likely X may not be the culprit either.

Re: No display to second monitor, but it is detected (AMD R9 380) (i3wm)

Just to rule out the usual culprit, try booting with

amdgpu.dc=0

in your kernel params.

Re: No display to second monitor, but it is detected (AMD R9 380) (i3wm)

Thanks for the response. Well something different happened once

 amdgpu.dc=0

- both monitors worked on the login screen which is progress, but when i3 and X started, the other monitor, that was working before, is now no longer receveing a signal, but the one that wasnt working, is working now. I edited my i3 config file to account for the fact that the monitor identifiers changed, and this issue persisted.
