Woup, that was a typo because I wrote it manually instead of copy pasting!
I installed ubuntu, and sound doesn't work there. So, would it be safe to assume that it's the kernel that doesn't support the imac sound card?
In the meantime, here goes the output for each run: (This time, I'll copy paste to avoid mistakes!)

What can i do to raise the bug at the kernel level?
Offline
Bump.
Anyone has a clue here?
Offline
bump again.
Offline
The annoying thing here is that it seems that our modul redefinitions did end up getting applied to the wrong card anyway, for simple testing purposes change both to the model you want to test. e.g.
options snd-hda-intel model=imac27,imac27
Maybe it's still a simple model issue.
FWIW, if another round of changing the models doesn't work, could you remove that line completely and post the result of running the alsa-info.sh Script after doing so (and rebooting beforehand of course)
Another alternative (without any model redefinitions) is to check if you might be able to rearrange the PINs using hdajackretask.
The complete lack of reports on this other than this thread makes me doubt that this is really a general kernel issue, however a good place to start would be asking on the ALSA mailing list if someone has experiences with this.
In general please try to not bump, and if you have to try and research new information on your own so that you might be able to provide new relevant information.
Offline
Changing the model does not solve the problem.
Here's the output of the script (after removing the line and rebooting) http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=216da … 4e6c1cca67
This is the latest iMac that i'm testing on. It's not a very common device and I doubt many would like to install linux on it.
Also, remember that I faced this issue while trying all sorts of other distros. I even hve ubuntu installed (triple boot OSX, arch, ubuntu), and even ubuntu can't play the sound.
I never posted anything to the ALSA mailing list. Can you point out where I should do that?
Thank you very much for the help and the tip regarding bumps.
Offline
Hi Taric.
I have also a iMac 27 2017 model and having the same problem you have. Never got the internal sound to work. I tried Mint, Arch, opensuse and are now on manjaro. Did excactly the same things you did to make it work and no go. Doesnt matter which distro you are running coz the sound is there but not via the internal speakers/headphones. On the other hand the bluetooth and network sound work perfectly fine and i use airplay, chromecast and bluetooth to play music and movies depending what i want to play.
Just have to wait for a smart geek to fix it
Cheers
Politically correct: A term used for whiny pussies that need shit sugar coated.

Hey Ruien,
It's great to see that i'm not the only one facing the problem.
So basically, you are using an external monitor/TV to play the sounds instead of the iMac right? Did you do this by connecting the iMac to the device via bluetooth?
I sure hope someone figures out what's going on. But in the meantime, I'll consider your solution.
Cheers!

FYI: Not an arch user, but found this thread as one of the first and have reported the issue to the ALSA mailing list.
This is a driver issue and as such related to the kernel, not the distribution (that said, some distro's adopt stuff faster than others ).
Topic of the e-mail is: No audio on iMac18,1 (A1418) with kernel 4.15.14
Might take a while for search engines to pick it up.
Have tested with hda-analyzer changing the I/O outputs, none of them got me audio on the speakers.

Hey Freaky,
Thx for posting to the ALSA mailing list. I had no clue how to do that, so Thx!
Googling the topic does yield the result at: https://www.spinics.net/lists/alsa-devel/msg76308.html
Keep us posted if you hear any news, and thx again for the help.

Did anyone find a solution to the no sound in iMac 27" issue? I have almost the exact same specs on a newer iMac. Tried several distros, but no sound. And no updates on the ALSA mailing list that I could find.
Thanks. (I hope this isn't considered necrobumping, as the issue was never resolved).
