startx hanging after update (Black screen)

On my first boot following a system upgrade earlier today ( pacman -Syu ) I started getting a black screen on log in. I can boot into tty just fine, but my xinit and startx both just go to black and hang. I had not been running a display manager, and was just logging in from the default terminal and have startx in my bash_profile.

I have been doing a lot of troubleshooting and seen a lot of errors this evening, but this is the current output of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log after I run xinit and let it hang for a while:

I omitted the end of the log file, which was just a lot of event handling that apparently happens when I forced shutdown with the power button. In this particular output, the system was completely frozen, and I was unable to jump to a new tty.

Here are my graphics card specs:

$ lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
Subsystem: Lenovo 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller

01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M] (rev a2)
Subsystem: Lenovo GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M]
Kernel driver in use: nvidia

Originally the desktop environment that I had been running was budgie. Through the course of tonight though, I ended up removing that and have just been trying to run lxde.
I have installed all the packages in the lxde group, and updated my ~/.xinitrc to contain 'exec startlxde'.

I tried to reinstall the xorg, nvidia, and nvidia-utils packages, and rebooting, with the same result.
I've also tried blacklisting the intel driver in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf to remedy conflicting graphic modules as well, to no avail.
I also tried updating the config files automatically with nvidia-xconfig.

I get this same result starting X from my bash_profile on login, and running startx, xinit, and startlxde directly.

Re: startx hanging after update (Black screen)

Remove whatever nvidia-xconfig generated and follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus instead.  Seeing as  Budgie is basically gnome-shell it does contain some explicit support for multi-card setups, which doesn't apply to other environents.
