Hello fellow community,
I use GDM as desktop manager, and to lock the display from XFCE I use gnome-screensaver-command -l. But the lock screen, contrary to Gnome 3 DE, doesn't have power controls - only password prompt. I would be glad to know if that's possible outside of Gnome Shell. Especially ability to suspend from gnome screensaver (which is essentially password prompt) without entering the password.

The old gnome-screensaver which you invoke using gnome-screensaver-command -l is deprecated since 2012 and has nothing to do with the lock screen in recent versions of gnome. That lockscreen is part of gnome-shell itself and cannot be used outside of a gnome session - basically gnome-shell provides the lockscreen and gdm is used to verify the user credentials.
If being able to suspend from the lock screen is important to you, what about just using the suspend key on your keyboard (assuming of course that your keyboard has one)? As far as I'm aware, screen lockers cannot intercept the event created by the suspend key so it should work. It certainly works with XScreenSaver.

Thanks for reply, I kind of expected that. Well, looks like gnome screensaver intercepts all possible keys including ones that control power. So I cannot hibernate laptop or desktop from enter password screen. And both lightdm and xscreensaver had deal-breaking issues last time I checked. Thanks for clarification, I will mark thread as [SOLVED]
