USB-C headphones don't even show up in dmesg, let alone work

I have the Xiaomi usbc noise cancelling earbuds, which work fine in my Google Pixel 2, but when I connnect them to my laptop, linux completely ignores them. Neither dmesg, lsusb, /proc/asound/cards, or pulseaudio show anything.

Connecting a usbc microsd reader works without a hitch (including automounting and everything), so the port is working.

I have no idea how to even begin to debug this. I found a thread in here from january on this forum of a user saying they work out of the box for them, which is pretty frustrating.

Are you sure that they work as class compliant audio devices? If you're not seeing anything in the logs, they're probably just expecting an analogue audio signal, which your PC/laptop may not be able to provide.

When you connect them, does anything get added to the journal?  Even a message about being unable to assign an address?

Since there's not even output in dmesg ...

The things seem to come w/ a control pad which seems to have a status LED - any indication it gets power supply? Does something happen if you press the buttons on the control pad?

The pixel doesn't have a dac, so they should work like one. They do have an indicator led, but it doesn't light up either

On any host? Otherwise this would sound as if it does not get powered up or init.
If the port works in general, it might still not provide sufficient power - eg. when on battery? Does it work on power supply?
