Dolphin missing icons if opened by application

Hi, so I am using i3 with no desktop manager, just a startx script. If I open Dolphin via a launcher or terminal it renders fine. However when doing "open containing folder" for downloads within Firefox or "open with" on folders within an already opened instance of Dolphin, the theming just isn't there. Might anyone have ideas how to start debuging this?

Here is a side by side. The only difference is the right side was launched indirectly

Please post images as smaller thumbnails or links.

Compare the environment of the two processes e.g.

cat /proc/$pidofdolphin$/environ

since you mention that you are using startx, have you made sure that your user session is set up correctly? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc Note the second blue box.

There is only one line with a difference:

Working:
DESKTOP_STARTUP_ID=i3/dolphin/530-194-MyComp_TIME8114978

Not working:
DESKTOP_STARTUP_ID=MyComp;1525200142;486428;20462_TIME8502486
