Hi,
I decided to install Mesa CVS instead the stable one, because I couldn't play Enemy Territory on my awesome laptop (Dell D410).
I downloaded Mesa, compiled, installed, and... got problem, because it expected much never 2D driver than the one I had. So I downloaded driver source from x.org and now it works.
My question is - why 2D driver for i810 in Arch is so outdated and how can I help updating it? This is serious issue, because it is not possible to play Enemy Territory with old 3D driver, and it requires newer 2D one!
Details:
- driver in current is xf86-video-i810 1.4.1.3-2
(it IS marked as outdated)
- driver on x.org website is xf86-video-i810-X11R7.1-1.6.0
- Mesa CVS is available from http://www.mesa3d.org/, I remember that it was a Mesa-CVS package in Arch, but I can't find it now
glxinfo output:
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 915GM 20050225 x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 6.5.1
already tested software:
- Enemy Territory
- Blender (also outdated in Arch)
- NeverBall
- Maniadrive
- more to come
If you are an i915 user and want to play games - update as I did and enjoy your hardware

xf86-video-i810 is outdated as the xorg server and apps in general. Arch is using xorg 7.0, not 7.1. You can find the reason for this situation in many other threads: xorg 7.1 is not compatible with ati and nvidia binary drivers. The next nvidia release will support 7.1, while god knows about ati.
Rumors say that the i810 driver in 7.1 is compatible with stuff in xorg 7.0, but xorg people do not support this kind of comatibility, I guess (xorg is now modular, but not SO modular ).
Anyway, in another threads in this forum there are PKGBUILDS for all the main components of xorg 7.1, including the new i810 drivers.
Just use them to compile what you need. Probably xorg 7.1 will be soon at disposal also as a binary package in a specific, not official repo.

ATI already released xorg-7.1 compatible binary driver, so what about xorg 7.1 in Arch?
I don't care about propertiary drivers, but having xorg 7.1 in distro would be nice.

Presumably we're waiting on nvidia now, so that hundreds of machines don't suddenly break on upgrade.
