I was looking for software to create live effects on audio. Naturally I went to Jack and the patch control it has is wonderful. However the fact that everything about it seems to be targeted to music professionals makes it kind of beyond me.
Is there someway (other than searching for Jack plugins) of creating audio effects on my mic output (the output that goes to other applications). Ideally with someway it mixing in music too (in the background).
If not, do you know how to mix two audio inputs with Jack, and how to combine the various filters and compressors and whatever to make some nice voice distortions?

Have you given audacity a try? I only use it for basic stuff, but it is quite versatile.

If you go with JACK, use e.g. qjackctl or cadence to connect the mic input to standalone audio effects, or LADSPA/VST/LV2 effect host, and finally to your preferred output. You can also connect whatever other audio to same output.
Pulseaudio has module-ladspa-sink, that I think you could use to apply LADSPA effects to your microphone stream.

AFAIK, you can only apply effects to pre-recorded audio with audacity.

Yeah that's what I was going for, but while there are loads of effects I can find with the LADSPA manager thingy. They're really complicated and seem more based on music production than small fun projects. I'll see if I can play around to get some of the effects I want...

You should try mixxx.
