[SOLVED] linux-firmware 20180416.b562d2f-1 CPU fan problems

After 'pacman -Syu', an update of linux-firmware to 20180416.b562d2f-1 makes my laptop's CPU fan control be very "nervous". The fan spikes to high RPMs every 2-3 seconds, with only the slightest increase in CPU load. It almost feels like the fan control only has a 0% and 100%  setting and nothing in between anymore. Downgrading to 20180314.4c0bf11-1 fixes the issue.

I'm on a Toshiba laptop and fan control has never been a problem before, so I've never had a need for lm-sensors. Fan speed with the downgraded firmware has proper correlation between fan speed and CPU load.

I'm guessing this is an upstream issue, but for this package it's not really obvious where to report these. Any ideas?

Humm firmware is something hardware manufacturers provide. So I would suppose you have to look up your laptop or its components online. I have no clue where would one provide firmware bugreports.

@loqs: thanks for the diffs, that puts me at least on the track of finding something. I would hope that all the NIC, Wifi and Bluetooth firmware additions/changes (which are the majority of the differences) could not have caused this problem?

@twelveeighty agreed I would leave those until all other firmwares have rules out as the cause.

I updated today and noticed that there was a new version of intel-ucode, so, as a test, I had 'pacman -Syu' update linux-firmware as well, since maybe there's a relationship between microcode and firmware...? Anyway, problem seems to be gone now in my case. I'll watch it for a few days and mark the thread solved if it's holding up.
