How to patch kernels on new kernels

I would like to know how I should handle new kernels for a modified x220 with IPS mod from nitrocaster.

I have a Thinkpad x220 and the mod from Nitrocaster with Arch as my OS.

Now since I update the kernel on regular basis I would like to know how this should be handled since it was mentioned that the kernel needs to be edited, compiled and then installed as mentioned  here

Moreover I am wondering how the editing and compiling works. Since I am new to kernel updates some hints would be useful
