Help Playing Windows Media

Is there a way to play a video from a website which in Windows XP will run through Windows Media Player, the website is http://www.kcm.org/media/ondemand/2006

On Windows like I said, you just click the link and it opens up, I'm wondering if this is possible under Linux.

MPlayer-plugin, gxine, and totem-xine with totem-plugin should all be able to play it fine (gxine in a separate window). The ordinary totem package plus the plugin is usually able to play WMVs but may fail to display some (not a common occurrence). Kaffeine's plugin should also work, but it is quite unstable and may cause your browser to crash.

(Konqueror *should* be able to play it without any tweaking by streaming it through an embedded session of Kaboodle, but the streaming media stuff in KDE was trashed to hell and back last I checked. Might have been because I hadn't installed kdeaddons, come to think of it, but I'm not sure...)

why do you recommend totem and kaffeine? isn't that some pretty-but-worse-support-than-mplayer-or-vlc-players?

doesn't those players require artsd loaded? /me is using oss2jack and hate artsd and esd.

No they do not. As far as I know, there is not a single media player in existance that *requires* artsd or esd to be running in order to work.

Also, I did not recommend them as first choices... I am just pointing out that they work. The totem plugin may still be rather limited but it plays most videos on the web, including older Quicktime movies that the gxine plugin borks on (some problem with streaming, not playing - gxine plays Quicktime fine). And I did mention mplayer-plugin, which is kind of the old standard...

(There are reasons I put in the other choices. Kaffeine because miller0521 might be using KDE, totem-plugin because he might not feel like switching media players if he uses Gnome, gxine because it can be convenient to watch "embedded" videos in a separate window. Also, FWIW, I didn't mention VLC because it seems to be compiled without the plugin enabled.)

BTW, miller, that website is 404 for me... You sure that's not your problem?

I can pull up the website under Windows and run the videos just fine. I tried mplayer, but it doesn't do anything.

You need the plugin, it's a separate package... do 'pacman -S mplayer-plugin'.

Okay mplayer works, but I guess not as well as Windows Media player, you can't even resize the video or make it go full screen. Maybe I'll tryo out gxine
I do use KDE if that makes any difference.

you need to enable direct rendering through xorg and select xv as the video output.

It should be able to do fullscreen without DRI, the little button with a box in it in the lower right corner toggles fullscreen mode.

(FWIW, do you have the kdeaddons package installed?)

If the MPlayer plug-in isn't giving you enough control, possibly having it launch externally would help. I think that both Totem and Kaffeine can do this too. I just don't use them for this functionality because MPlayer works so well for me. You may also want to look into VLC as an external movie player. (I hope that one day VLC will be the ultimate media player for Linux).

I'm also curious about what Gullible Jones said in the last post. Do you not have the referred button on the MPlayer plug-in? I can go to full screen mode with one click. Can you?
