Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

downgrading to xorg-1.19.6... fixes the problem. I wanted to post it in case there is a bug/someone else has the same problem. I would like to know if someone manages to run xorg-1.20 with sddm-0.17, in case is something else.

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

The path to the Xorg binary just changed.  SDDM likely needs an update (at least to a default configuration) to point to the location of the Xorg binary.

Edit, nevermind, it looks like it uses /usr/bin/X

Same problem here with gdm.

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

Did you make sure this is an issue specifically with SDDM, and not Xorg in general? i.e. do other DMs work, or can you start X with 'startx'?

In any case it would be good idea to post logs from failed SDDM startup.

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

Similar problem here, but using lightdm.
I have xfce and cinnamon installed, I cannot login into xfce, but it works fine with cinnamon...
Any suggestion?

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

Posting "me too" comments really doesn't help, especially when they're not necessarily related to the OP's issue.
At least post logs or other details that might give some clue of what's causing the issue.

If any of you are using the nvidia-390xx driver: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=237045

Building on ooo's point,  it also applies to nvidia-340xx series.

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

Do we know for a fact that OP's issue is related to nvidia blob?

I also had to downgrade (xorg-server, xorg-server-common and xf86-video-nouveau) but I'm running nouveau.

Lightdm wouldn't start, nor would xfce4 with startxfce4, even with a new user. However, running startx (with default xinitrc: twm, xterm, etc) worked.

No logs at the moment, will post tomorrow if appropriate.

These are the last lines of /.local/share/xorg/Xorg.1.log
Is this enough or you need full log, I am no expert in this...

edit: I have nvidia card 1050ti but with nouveau drivers

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

Can you please remove the package xf86-video-nouveau and post an updated xorg.log if the issue still persists.

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

It will be the same file X renames the old log to Xorg.1.log.old and the latest one will be Xorg.1.log
Edit:
So it appears xf86-video-nouveau is the cause of the issue on your system at least.

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

A similar problem is also mentioned here, xfwm4 is apparently using deprecated functions that may be broken now: https://www.linuxquestions.org/question … ost5853922

@loqs, thanks, at least I can login again now!

I think there is no new file there, just the one I submitted.
If so, it means no errors?

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

@spsf64 No there should still be a log file just the new one should not contain

[ 746.497] (EE) Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

etc.  Are you using xfwm4?
@progandy you think arch should similarly rebuild xfwm4 to disable its compositor at least until X and or xfwm4 address the issue?

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

@logs: Probably xfwm should be recompiled or there will be tons of bug reports when 1.20 lands in extra. I guess xorg 1.20 could stay in testing until that is fixed properly, though. [Edit: I already saw it was stable, why did I forget that? ]

I wonder what the issue is with sddm, though. qt5 shouldn't use old deprecated APIs, right?

I have the same problem. If I use xf86-video-nouveau then I get the following crash

edit. I doubt this is an xfce problem since the upgrade to 1.20 on a couple of other machines here using xfce using the intel video driver is fine.

@loqs: Yes using xfce4/xfwm4
I tried kernel 4.16.9 (from testing) + xf86-video-nouveau = same problem, then tried kernel 4.16.9 + nvidia (testing) = success

@progandy, xorg 1.20 is already in extra/stable...

@skunktrader: try to remove xf86-video-nouveau as suggested by loqs above and give us feedback

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

Ok, back to 4.16.8 + nvidia + xorg 1.20 (all from std repos, no testing) and everything is fine!
Apparently the problem is related to nouveau

Just for the record, my system is: nvidia 1050ti, lightdm and xfce4

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

Just another data point, maybe related, not sure..

xorg-1.20 update broke my desktop (Gnome on Xorg - note: wayland session does work)

I have xf86-video-ati (for old hardware) and if I remove that driver, Xorg works by falling back to modesetting driver

This appears in the journal repeatedly:

May 18 10:29:45 beast /usr/lib/gdm-x-session[685]: radeon: The kernel rejected CS, see dmesg for more information (-22).
May 18 10:29:45 beast kernel: radeon 0000:01:05.0: texture bo too small ((1920 1080) (32 8) 4 26 0 -> 8294400 have 4096)
May 18 10:29:45 beast kernel: radeon 0000:01:05.0: alignments 1920 32 8 1024
May 18 10:29:45 beast kernel: [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl [radeon]] *ERROR* Invalid command stream !

I tried downgrading mesa - no change. Couldn't be arsed downgrading all of Xorg so I might just run with modesetting driver and see how it goes...

Re: Updating to xorg-server-1.20 breaks sddm-0.17

Xorg 1.20 also breaks sddm for me, but I'm using intel i915. The *way* in which it doesn't work is interesting though. Booting works just fine, but when it launches sddm, the boot log remains visible, with a mouse cursor on top of it (but no other visual elements). It *seems* like sddm is still running in the background, because if I type my password, the screen changes to all black, as if it (unsuccessfully) tried to start my window manager. Downgrading xorg-server{,-common} to 1.19 fixes the issue.
