Steam exits without doing anything, but no errors either

It's yet another Steam post, but this one is a little stranger.  So I have Steam installed on Arch64, and I'm running Plasma.  Everything is up-to-date per pacman.  I have an nVidia graphics card (a 570 GTX), and I have the 64- and 32-bit proprietary drivers installed, along with steam-runtime.  Locale was set to UTF-8 when I installed Arch, and I installed steam-fonts from the AUR.

I'll add that Steam has never actually worked on this machine.

Anyway, if I run Steam from the command line, this is what I get:

[johnny5@archBox ~]$ steam
Running Steam on arch rolling 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Pins up-to-date!
[johnny5@archBox ~]$

In other words, it just prints out that text, then exits.  (Going through the icon in KDE just gives me the bouncing icon by my cursor, then nothing.)

The only log I can find is

bootstrap_log.txt

in ~/.local/share/Steam, and it just says:

 [2018-5-16 15:47:32] Startup - updater built April 2 2018 15:23:43

There are earlier entries for previous updates, but nothing indicating any problems.  The only file in /tmp/dumps has the same three lines that I get when running from the command line.

I've also tried removing steam and then installing it again (via pacman), but it still does the same thing.

At this point I'm not sure what else I can try, and am not even clear on what's wrong.  Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Are you sure steam isn't already running on background? I get pretty much the same command line output in that situation.

I don't know if KDE still has system tray, but steam icon should appear there.
Also check e.g. 'ps -A steam', to check for already running steam processes.

I suggest you install steam-native-runtime. Then use

steam-native

to run steam

I'm sure.  Both ps and kSysGuard do not show any entries for Steam.

As I said in my original post, I have steam-native installed.  Running steam-native vs. just steam gives the same results.

Re: Steam exits without doing anything, but no errors either

Your orignal post makes no mention of steam-native-runtime, this is not the same as steam-runtime.

Assuming you have installed native, it's still worth double checking what you have installed as it has been in AUR previously possibly under names, and there was a steam-multilib repository with all this in for a time. These older versions may not work. Now everything is in multilib.

I suggest you try steam-native with either a clean boot or at the very least a fresh login. Running steam or steam-runtime first can leave steam processes running or possibly stale lock files which could prevent steam-native running correctly.

Also, you mention your nvidia card, is this in an optimus laptop or a desktop?

I have tried this, no difference in results.

Desktop, and I've installed the nvidia-380xxx drivers and utils (32-bit versions too).
