Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

I've been working for a few days trying to solve this issue but with little success, so I decided to post smile
Like many other Archers my nvidia card is not longer supported by the default nvidia driver.

To get things going I decided to temporarily run nouveau. It has a horrible performance though and it freezes every so often
for a couple of seconds.
Today I was reading in detail the info about my options and the next option would be nvidia-lts. I installed it with the same results
as the default nvidia. A blinking cursor ... that's all.

When I try to load the driver via modprobe nvidia-lts it says "Not found in directory /lib/modules/4.16.8-1-ARCH but the installation
of the driver says it was a success. If I query pacman -Q nvidia-lts it reports "nvidia-lts 1:396.24-1"
So it IS there.
Best thing is that now even nouveau does no longer work.

Any ideas?

Thanks guys.

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

nvidia-lts is the nvidia driver compiled for the linux-lts kernel it will not work with the linux kernel.
Edit:
as your card was dropped from support in nvidia 396.24+ that mean nvidia-lts will also not support your card.

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

I installed linux-lts too when I installed nvidia-lts but it did not work at all. Failed just as before with a blinking cursor.
And the modprobe loading of the driver fails with the message that is not found in the /lib directory.

Any other ideas?

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

The module will be named nvidia not nvidia-lts what is the dmesg output from linux-lts?

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

OK. The dmesg says that the driver supported is the nvidia-390xx.
I had tried it yesterday but did not work.
I re-installed it again, did the modprobe thing and ... It worked!!

Thanks buddy! Much appreciated.

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

Today, after an update of the kernel and the 390xx nvidia driver I rebooted, as I usually do, to load the new kernel.
To my surprise the problem is back. I get the loading messages up to:

[OK] Reached target Graphical Inerface

and then a blinking cursor.

dmesg shows that the nvidia driver was loaded but sddm does not load the GUI.
Any ideas?

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

Get sddm out of the equation.
Boot into multi-user.target, check dmesg, if everything looks ok, startx xterm and try glxinfo & glxgears for a functional test.
If anything from startx and up fails, check the xorg log.

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

@seth,

Thanks for the reply.
I do not have x. As far as I can remember (this system has been with me for a bunch of years now), I only set sddm and that did it's magic and loded KDE.
If I type startx I get "command not found", which makes sense to me.

Is it your suggestion to install x and go from there?

Of course glxgears is a "command not found" but glxinfo replys "unable to open display"

dmesg, after the error does not give me any clues.

/etc/Xorg.0.log complaints of :

NVIDIA: Use the -ignoreABI option to override this check. UnloadModule nvidia
Failed to load module "nvidia" (unkown error, 0)
No drivers available

Edit: I just noticed that there is a warning:

This server has a video driver ABI version of 24.0 that this driver does not officially support.
Please check nvidia.com or downgrade to an X server with a supported driver ABI

The driver is the suggested by nvidia.
Where would i use the -ignoreABI code? I tested the kernel line on boot but did not work.

Thanks.

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

X11 is your display server (sddm and kde run on top of it), startx is just a frontend for xinit, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit
glx* require a running X11 server, glxgears is in mesa-demos

Please forget about the ignoreABI switch and post the entire Xorg log as well as

pacman -Qs nvidia
pacman -Qs linux
uname -a

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

I've added the ignoreABI line into the xorg.conf file.
It now goes to the graphical interface and shows the cursor but that's it.

I'm not sure what the problem is, since yesterday it worked fine.

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

Well ... this is odd.
I did a pacman -Ss nvidia-390xx and I only have access to nvidia-390xx 390.48-4 I do not have an option for 390.59-1

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

OK. Since you can see a higher version than I can I decided to update my mirrorlist, just in case.
I then loaded all the servers and run a pacman -Syy

Thereafter I could see the new nvidia-390xx at the correct version.

I did upgrade and problem solved.
I'm guessing that yesterday's update came from a not fully updated server and that caused the problem.

Thank you for your help.

Best,

R.

Re: Nvidia Issues [SOLVED]

Presumably you haven't updated your sync databases (updated) since nvidia-390xx-390.59-1 hit the repos (earlier today).

pacman -Syu

If you still don't get the updated version. your mirror is out of date.

EDIT: crossposted with the above. You've been on the forums for over 10 years, and have a relatively large nuber of posts, so hopefully "upgraded" in your post means you updated everything, and not just the nvidia-390xx package. wink

Yes. I figured something like that.
The problem is now solved.
Thanks.
