I've had the same problem with CAVA, etc. I use pulseaudio, I even have a notifications applet that works great, I can't understand why so many other apps can't recognize my audio device. My audio works fine, in browser, out browser, it just works - except in these few apps, which have no option of specifying pulse audio.. I would assume it would just select the default device, but its not? Please somebody help a very frustrated person...

pianobar uses libao, you can adjust your /etc/libao.conf and set the default_driver=pulse (and remove the dev line)
More generally, make sure you have pulseaudio-alsa installed, as that will set up a compatibility config that applications which can only use the ALSA API will be redirected to pulse if they open the default device.
