Well, the directories are correct. Can you give the exact message you get when typing 'startx' ?

My font.conf is the default (its a new install)

<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir>
<dir>~/.fonts</dir>
I don't have a /usr/X11R6* btw (should I?)
