[Solved] Chromium complains "out of memory" and aborts

A few days ago I rebooted my desktop computer (Ryzen 1600, GTX 1060) and found that Chromium could not boot. It outputs:

Deducing from htop, it appears to consume 1 GB before the crash.
(The stack trace doesn't return anything helpful; the only functions shown are raise, abort, and write).

Other applications based on Chromium/Electron, such as Steam (webview) and Vivaldi, also exhibit this issue.
Running Discord returns this:

I tried removing/renaming .config/chromium, .cache/chromium, .pki, and it still crashed.

Interestingly enough, I tried running Chromium on live ISOs of various Arch-based distros and there were no crashes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does dmesg give you anything on the crash? When I had similar issues, dmesg suggested to increase rlimit_data or entirely ignore it via kernel params, doing so has alleviated most of my issues, in this regard.

nvidia  396 on xorg 1.20 - "great" :-\

See whether this works and in case which switch is the crucial one:

chromium --disable-gpu --no-sandbox

It doesn't work.

I also forgot to mention that I tried downgrading all packages to those before xorg 1.20 came out (May 10 or so), and the problem still persisted.

Wild guess, try raising the file descriptor limit and also check df on your $HOME partition.
Does it work with a completely fresh user?

Since at least discord seems to abort from getaddrinfo (chromium backtrace might actually still be helpful), what about your network connection?
Do you have one, what does it look like (multiple interfaces, VPN, /etc/nsswitch.conf, hostnamectl, ...), what manages it - and does it work w/o any network?
