After upgrading kernel26 package i can't mount any cd, usb storage or any other device using kde media, i think this is because of procFS modifications made at this kernel version or some misconfiguration on kernel compilation.
Downgrading to previouse version brings it back alive and kicking, so it can only be kernel26 package.
Edit: Solved in kernel version 2.6.17.6

it seems that already is another release of the kernel fixing the procFS. Sure hope that fixes this!

You might want to try kernel 2.6.17.6

I need to update this. I went over to FlySpray to make sure that this problem was being addressed and I ran into a bug report. It was someone also having problems after the upgrade. The responce was that it was fixed in the 2.6.17.6 kernel. So I went ahead and tried again. This is what happened:
Reboot into KDE.
Plug in a USB flashdrive
KDE complains about not being able to open the directory, no FStab...
Log into root console
Change to the directory and the device is mounted(!?!)
Eject it
Re-plug it in and KDE shows it mount
Now everything seems to working correctly
I'm not sure why this happened, but the new kernel does seem to be functioning.
EDIT-->> I reboot after I wrote this thread, plugged in a flash drive, and KDE complained that it couldn't enter /dev/sda1. I ejected the device, plugged it back in again, and it worked properly. The first run now has caused problems multiple times. This is different behavior than before the upgrade from 2.6.17.4.

So, it's better to stick with the 2.6.17.4 for the moment. If the package maintainers already knows what's going on, there will be some answers in no time.

This could be an HAL defect and not a KDE bug... it would be good to have some info on GNOME users.

I run openbox, and have no longer problems with HAL and the newest kernel. But I do use the gnome file manager, and it has no problems loading devices "on-the-fly".
