ASUS vivobook S400C - erratic touchpad behavior

I'm using the synaptics driver. Although it doesn't seem to be supported right now, I never had any similar issues when using it on other laptops. Anyway, sometimes whenever I touch the touchpad the cursor starts moving and clicing everything without any movement from my fingers. This laptop has a touchscreen that works fine, they don't seem to be conflicting, since disabling it won't stop the touchpad from going haywire.

xorg log

% xinput list

Kinda lost on where to look next, do you guys have any advice? Thanks a lot!

I'm guessing it's an issue between the new versions of X and the now unmaintained synaptics.

My suggestion would be to switch to libinput instead.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Ok, I just tried your suggestion, now using libinput with the synaptics pkg removed, the problem persists, nothing has changed. Also, if I have an usb mouse plugged in, the mouse works as expected, just like the touchscreen, the cursor only starts misbehaving if i touch the touchpad.

Edit: some xinput test output of me just resting my finger on the pad for a sec or so:

% xinput test 15

motion a[0]=360 a[1]=275

Re: ASUS vivobook S400C - erratic touchpad behavior

I have a similar Asus laptop with same touchpad (Asus Vivobook S551LN). After some time, Elantech touchpad started to behave strangely: basically the right click is always pushed, so every time I move the pointer it drags and selects everything in its path.

In my case I already verified it is an hardware problem (same thing happens with windows 10). I tried to fix it on the hardware side, but I didn't succeed. The only software workaround I found is to remap button keys with xinput.

You mean the left click?

Although I considered the possibility of hardware damage, I just installed arch on this machine and the touchpad was working properly in windows. Actually it was slow as shit, the scrolling sucked (linux's synaptics driver's momentum scrolling is sooo fast and smooth) and the only thing configurable about it was the scrolling direction... but anyway, no misbehaving. Also, I got the touchscreen working pretty much just like it does in windows, mail me if you need any help with that.
