Extremely slow operation after removing dsl connection

big_smile  smile

While investigating USB performance in kernel 2.6.3, I decided to remove the ethernet connection to DSL.  The following occured:

The clock selection in BIOS changed to manual.

The boot sequence hung for a minute on peripherals, and againtwo steps later and then it took two minutes to display the task bar and any selection from the start menu included a long wait (bouncing time icon).

The selection of logout gave the correct window but no selection of restart or shutdown was possible with the mouse.(USB mouse).

##The reconnection of the DSL restored proper functions upon reboot.

   ###  The next experiment repeated the above occurences...I disconnected the DSL modem from my system....a hub exists between the DSL modem and my computer 75 feet away.  The same problems appeared when I rebooted.

After reinstalling the DSL modem, the system returned to normal functions and I am now addressing the forum with the system.

My eth0 appears on irq9 and shares that with acpi and USB elements.

What is the solution to this weird problem????

P.S.    The same thing happens when the phone line is disconnected at the modem so it is a data or handshaking disruption which triggers the computer into a search mode from which there is no time-out.

What should be done to fix?

Re: Extremely slow operation after removing dsl connection

What do you mean remove the DSL ehternet connection?  Do you mean you pulled out the cable?

That is correct for every case discussed.  The first was at the computeup and running, the second with the computer down and it was disconnected at the modem.  The third case was with the computer down and disconnect the phone line.

Re: Extremely slow operation after removing dsl connection

Most likely it was a DNS timeout.

What does your /etc/hosts file look like?

What is your local system's hostname set to?

Don't know local system name...where should it be?

I assume I need one, but I only know my host name n6re .

I suppose I am missing something...

Re: Extremely slow operation after removing dsl connection

You set it in /etc/rc.conf.

HOSTNAME=

Re: Extremely slow operation after removing dsl connection

ok, put n6re at the end of the 127.0.0.1 line (with a space between it and the last entry there).  That way n6re will resolve to 127.0.0.1 and unplugging your network cable won't matter.
