I didn't used scanner for a long time, it used to work.
That's what I have now:
$ scanimage -L
device `xerox_mfp:tcp 192.168.100.139' is a Samsung M267x 287x Series multi-function peripheral$ scanimage --format=png > test.png
Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x00 0x00$ simple-scan
(simple-scan:1532): Gtk-WARNING **: 19:42:31.128: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "RegisterClient" with signature "ss" on interface "org.xfce.Session.Manager" doesn't exist
Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x00 0x00
$ xsane
Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x00 0x00
Any ideas?

Is this still broken for you? When was the last time you successfully scanned something?
Googling that weird
Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x00 0x00
error gave these promising links with fixes that indicates it might be an issue with new versions of SANE or a missing Samsung driver:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1530216
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1707352
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1724078
Also, double-check the wiki SANE article to make sure all your permissions and configs are correct. My Fujitsu scanner stopped working recently after being fine a couple months ago, and it turned out to be a permissions problem on the manufacturer's driver.

Hi NoobAlice,
Yes, it is still broken for me.
Last time I successfully scanned, was more than a year ago. In a meantime, since Linux scan interface abilities were kinda limited, I switched to WIndows scanner interface, which works flawlessly. Also, Android scanner applications for smartphones do pretty amazing job when you need to scan something fast and dirty, and the scanning volume is not too high.
I googled the issue fair amount of time (including your links, thank you), and found that it is attributed to libsane upgrade by another linux flavors participants.
I tried relevant proprietary Samsung driver from their website (Samsung printer/scanner business is sold to HP, BTW), the results are the same.
I posted the issue in Arch forum couple of times, but didn't get any feedback.
I'll try you permission advice on Wiki Sane.
Also, there is another "Failed to register client" GTK issue with simple-scan, see my original post.

SANE last updated 2017-05-23 which fits in your span of not using it, so perhaps it overwrote one of your configs. That's why I think you should go through the entire SANE wiki page and the Samsung section of scanner problems, not just the permissions part.
Simple scan is small and easy, but I've previously used gscan2pdf and found it had a lot more options available. Once you get SANE working, you might try that or one of the other frontends like xsane. I think you should ignore the simple-scan error until you have SANE's scanimage command working.
However, I did just look up
Method "RegisterClient" with signature "ss" on interface "org.xfce.Session.Manager" doesn't exist
and found this:
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/simple-scan … e/35220/15
...and this French topic:

Additionally, following this thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161454
Have you looked at the SANE man page for your backend?

As you try different things from the wiki and those bug reports, be sure to list them out in case someone comes along who can help you better than I can.
