How to stream live gaming on local net between linux boxes

Ok so I have a decent gaming desktop running linux with some steam games I would like to stream to my linux laptop over my local network (I'm using a decent high speed isp router, but I also have a Asus darknight router I can use soon and I should mention the desktop will be connected via Ethernet and the laptop will be using 5ghz wifi   (pings are about 1-2ms ).
So far I have tried realvnc(enterprise) direct connect and mkchromecast screencast(with a chrome cast), but the lag is unusable for real time video. I'm also considering trying remote HDMI cards, but would rather not spend anything on hardware.
Please recommend some high performance solutions, thanks in advance. Please keep in mind I want my desktops graphics card to do all the work, and use a controller( which could have its own solution altogether).
p.s. If this is off topic my apologizes, I'm not try to software shop or more understand what technologies will work and what will not.

I've never tried this, but I remember reading awhile back about Steam itself offering In home streaming. I cannot vouch for its performance, but from what I gathered is it was free for steam users. Other then that I've used my Chromecast in past, but was horrible performance so gave up. Good luck

What comes to mind is something like a monitor connected over LAN; would xdmx possibly work?
