[SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Hi,

I upgraded xorg-server to 1.20.0-5 : /var/log/pacman.log

[2018-06-01 09:52] [ALPM] upgraded xorg-server (1.20.0-2 -> 1.20.0-5)

I now have twin screens side by side on my physical display

xrandr -q shows

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1366 x 768, maximum 32767 x 32767
LVDS1~1 connected 683x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 170mm x 190mm
   683x768       59.99*
   1366x768      59.99    40.06
   1280x720      59.86    60.00    59.74
   1024x768      60.00
   1024x576      60.00    59.90    59.82
   960x540       60.00    59.63    59.82
   800x600       60.32    56.25
   864x486       60.00    59.92    59.57
   640x480       59.94
   720x405       59.51    60.00    58.99
   680x384       60.00
   640x360       59.84    59.32    60.00
LVDS1~2 connected 683x768+683+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 170mm x 190mm
   683x768       59.99*
   1366x768      59.99    40.06
   1280x720      59.86    60.00    59.74
   1024x768      60.00
   1024x576      60.00    59.90    59.82
   960x540       60.00    59.63    59.82
   800x600       60.32    56.25
   864x486       60.00    59.92    59.57
   640x480       59.94
   720x405       59.51    60.00    58.99
   680x384       60.00
   640x360       59.84    59.32    60.00
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

If I try

xrandr --output LVDS1\~2 --off

then X crashes. I have no monitor.conf file and my last my xorg.log (after the X crash) is

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Please try rebuilding xorg-server with https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … ab9b17#n57 and 58 commented out and test if the issue still occurs.
Edit:
Or downgrade the xorg-server and xorg-common at least to test releases 1.20.0-4 and 1.20.0-3 from https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/x/ to see if the issue is still present.

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Thank you for your answer
Sorry. I should have mentioned that before posting in the forum I already tried to downgrade both xorg-server and xorg-server-common to their previous version. That did not solve my problem.
I'm now trying your first suggestion

Was anything else installed/updated that you did not downgrade?  I would expect if you downgraded all the packages to their previous versions the issue would not occur.

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Did you esp. also downgrade xf86-video-intel? Also try w/o the intel driver (using the modesetting one)

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

In my first attempt, I downgraded xorg-server and xorg-server-common only.
Downgrading the whole xorg group does not solve the issue. I cant downgrade the intel driver because I cannot find its previous pkg.tar.gz file

If I remove xf86-video-intel, X does not start (I have the line

MODULES="i915"

in my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf). The Xorg.log says

Rebuilding xorg-server with https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … ab9b17#n57 and 58 commented does not solve the issue either (with  xf86-video-intel reinstalled)

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

One of the configlets in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d or /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d will explicitly select the intel driver (you probably added it w/ the optimus config) - this is not related to the kernel module.
Also https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_packages

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

I now have the intel driver uninstalled and also removed any conf file which tells X to select the intel driver under both /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
I also downgraded all relevant xorg packages.
X starts but the twin screen issue remains
It seems I cant tell xrandr to disconnect one of the two outputs. If I do so, X terminates without error according to my xorg.log :

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

I also downgraded all relevant xorg packages.

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Yes.
The issue I am reporting arose right after a pacman -Syyu that upgraded Xorg server from 1.20.0-2 (which worked absolutely fine) to 1.20.0-5

[2018-06-01 09:52] [ALPM] upgraded xorg-server (1.20.0-2 -> 1.20.0-5)

(see my initial post). Thus I downgraded to 1.20.0-2 :

$ pacman -Q xorg-server
xorg-server 1.20.0-2

Are you suggesting I should further downgrade to 1.1x ?

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Afaiu the randr issue arose w/ the 1.20 version, not with some rebuild. (It might have gone initially unnoticed to you?)

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

I downgraded the whole system to its 2018-05-15 state :

$ more /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2018/05/15/$repo/os/$arch

Then I ran  pacman -Syyuu
As we can see, the xorg-server stuff version is now 1.19.xxx but the issue persists

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Ok, this is probably unrelated to the 1.20 fuzz and I'm not sure about the traceless "crash" either - do you get a coredump? (coredumpctl)
For clarification: before the update you had only one LVDS1 output which you could turn on and off, after some™ update, you got the split monitors (each half the resolution) and attempting to control one does shit™ rather than eg. turning off the right part of your screen (do you intend that at all?)

What happens for

xrandr --delmonitor 'LVDS1~2'

?

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

$ xrandr -q
...
LVDS-1~2 connected

However

$ xrandr --delmonitor LVDS-1\~2
No monitor named 'LVDS-1~2'
$ xrandr --delmonitor 'LVDS-1~2'
No monitor named 'LVDS-1~2'

About coredumps. Yes: whenever

xrandr some_args

causes X to terminate, I get an openbox coredump. For instance

$ coredumpctl
...
Wed 2018-06-06 17:27:29 CEST  28424  1000   100   6 present   /usr/bin/openbox

I noticed this prior to my first post and I thus switched to another WM/DE to see whether this could be reproduced. I tried fluxbox, cinnamon and gnome. I have the same issue as with my favorite openbox WM.

There is however a difference (which may be significant). If I tell xrandr to show information about the LVDS-1~2 output

xrandr --output LVDS-1\~2 --properties

which should be harmless, both output are turned off, whatever the DE/WM that was started. With openbox only, I further get a coredump and X terminates. With other WM, X and the WM remain alive only showing a black screen

Edit :

For clarification: before the update you had only one LVDS1 output which you could turn on and off, after some™ update, you got the split monitors (each half the resolution)

Yes (I do this frequently)

and attempting to control one does shit™ rather than eg. turning off the right part of your screen (do you intend that at all?)

Yes.

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Can you look into the coredump and post the stacktrace (it's relevant whether openbox dies because it looses the connection to the server or openbox dies and the server terminates because it looses the session)
Stupid question: are the xorg logs xorg.0.log from while an X server is running (for then it's just the running one, the old one is cycled to Xorg.0.log.old)

Edit: oh, and also try the LTS kernel.

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

step 1 : I log in and start openbox (startx from tty1)
step 2 :

xrandr
xrandr --output LVDS-1\~2 --prop

Consequence : openbox and X crash

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

X doesn't crash, but terminates because openbox (the session keeping process) aborts.
Openbox aborts placing windows, likely because there's either no monitor left or the root window is zero-sized. At least no placing strategy succeeds.
You could try to sigstop openbox, xrandr, and sigcont openbox (you'll probably have to to that in a single call - i'm not sure whether input will work with a stopped openbox.

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Thank you for spending so much time and effort on this issue
I do not know how to send input to the system while the session WM is suspended. A script that tests whether openbox is stopped and executes xrandr if true ?

Two remaks.
1. openbox is the only WM which crashes after xrandr. I tried many WM (eg i3 or cinnamon) and

xrandr --output LVDS-1\~2 --prop

does not terminate the WM. The same issue arises when I lauch a session from ttyN with no WM at all

startx /usr/bin/xterm

2. I upgraded the whole system with the latest versions and builds of installed pacakges. I now have 4 outputs !

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

pkill -SIGSTOP openbox; xrandr --output LVDS-1\~2 --prop; sleep 2; pkill -SIGCONT openbox

This stops openbox, calls into xrandr, waits two seconds and finally continues openbox.

NOTICE! The moment openbox continues it will process ALL input that happened while it was stopped.
So if you eg. had a lot of fun with pressing close buttons w/o any immediate effect, you're now screwed :-P

Re: [SOLVED]xrandr : two outputs and single display after xorg-server upda

Everything is back to normal. I mean a single LVDS-1 output, full resolution.
I do not know exaclty how I did manage to do that. I've been playing with a tool which is called fakexrandr-manage. Contrarily to arandr or such, openbox does not crash when I use fakexrandr-manage to control the display. I simply deleted all ouputs. openbox did not crash and I was sent back to a single normal output after reboot
Thanks again for your interest in my issue. Arch linux is a great piece of work but it wouldnt be that much without its community and people like you
