Firefox no video

I usually watch videos on my desktop computer. Today as I went to netflix it gave me an error. I did not pay too much attention to it but as I have been trying to see videos in different websites I get a consistent failure.

I investigated and found this error in the console:

The video on this page can’t be played. Your system may not have the required video codecs for: video/mp4

Now, this has not been an issue ever before and I have not done, that I am aware of, any changes to remove my video codecs.

Any ideas to deal with the problem would be appreciated.

Thanks guys!!

You may want to work through this section of the wiki and report back any diagnostic information.

Re: Firefox no video

OK. It seems like H.264 is not working.
I have ffmpeg up to date.
I'm using nvidia drivers, perhaps one of the latest updates broke something?
The path to the plugin (H.264) in firefox is however there: $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/u7k95npa.default/gmp-gmpopenh264/1.7.1` and the files are found in place as expected.
???!!

Re: Firefox no video

Have you enabled DRM in firefox?

I love archlinux: the last STABLE kernel release + the last STABLE DE release + the last STABLE apps releases. The upstream developers decide what is STABLE.

Re: Firefox no video

Well it is 60.1.x but I do not think the small .x versions make a difference in this case. smile

Re: Firefox no video

I did a test yesterday.
I loaded Firefox developer edition 61.0b10 and ... video works.
That made me think the problem is some sort of corruption in my profile. So ... I deleted the ~/.mozilla directory with everything in it.
I installed a new version of firefox and ... same problem !! sad
I cannot believe it!!

OK, I'll take your word for it.  If you know the cause of the problem, you should mark your thread as SOLVED, if you don't you should let us decide what may or may not make a difference.  The fact that you are reluctant to share something as simple as a version number of a package just begs many questions ... that I don't have any motivation to even ask.

Re: Firefox no video

@Trilby,

I'm not reluctant to share the version. The precise version is 60.0.1.
But it is the same version it was installed the day before things got messed up. That's why I do not think is the "core" reason for the problem.

I also installed the development version and that does play the movies fine, so I'm thinking the problem is neither the browser itself or the video codecs. Perhaps something related to my profile?

Do you get my train of thought now?
