[SOLVED] lightdm login loop XFCE

I read several topics/post on the subject. Nothing helps so far.

I have a current arch base installed. I installed X:

sudo pacman -S xorg-server xorg-apps xorg-xinit xorg-twm xterm --noconfirm --needed
sudo pacman -S xf86-video-nouveau --noconfirm --needed

On boot, entering 'startx', I'm brought to the X session

Then I installed xfce, lightdm:

sudo pacman -Syyu
sudo pacman -S lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings --noconfirm --needed
sudo pacman -S xfce4 xfce4-goodies --noconfirm --needed
sudo systemctl enable lightdm.service -f
sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target

On boot, I'm greeted with lightdm login prompt. When I enter my login, it loops back to login prompt.

My nivida graphics chip is 6150SE-legacy. ITs no longer supported for kernel 15 and avove, so I use nouveau:

pacman -Qs nouveau:
local/mesa 18.0.4-1
    An open-source implementation of the OpenGL specification
local/xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.15-3 (xorg-drivers)
    Open Source 2D acceleration driver for nVidia cards
pacman -Qs libgl
local/libglvnd 1.0.0-1
    The GL Vendor-Neutral Dispatch library
local/mesa 18.0.4-1
    An open-source implementation of the OpenGL specification

journalctl -b:

Re: [SOLVED] lightdm login loop XFCE

I had a problem like that.

I made a mistake editing /etc/profile. I discovered the mistake because I tried to login from the console with that user and when I did the error was given throught stdout.

I hope it helps!

Re: [SOLVED] lightdm login loop XFCE

I wonder if this fixes the xfwm error?

Re: [SOLVED] lightdm login loop XFCE

"Installed xfwm4-4.12.4" sounds like a partial update - don't do that. ("pacman -Sy foo", either "pacman -S foo" or "pacman -Syu foo")

pacman -Qs xorg-server

Isn't that what the fix that @logs pointed to does? The fix disables compositing?!  Wouldn't a downgrade of xorg-server work better?

At any rate, at least I know the problem. At manjaro, their aware of the issue and are only allowing xorg-server 1.19. I wasn't aware of any issue until I tried to apply current updates.
edit2:now that I look at xorg-server output, it is 1.19. looks like xfwm is the culprit.

-=moving on=-
I was just wanting to keep my xfce arch linux current.

I'm going to make this topic solved, I have installed Enlightenment on my arch linux and it worked without issue, albeit an unusual WM. A cross between i3 and openbox.

Thanks all for the help. As always, it was a learning experience, both with xfwm and now Enlightenment.

Re: [SOLVED] lightdm login loop XFCE

No, loqs' link points to a bug in xorg-server causing this stack trace, a patch (reverting the culprit commit) and a confirmation of the patch and a PKGBUILD and yet another patch (to hopefully fix the problematic commit) and a PKGBUILD for that.
So if you're still running some stock xorg-server package, you'll still face this bug (just maybe not tripping into it) - the xfwm version is irrelevant, the bug is NOT in xfce.

I did apply the bug, but it still failed.

You did "what" exactly? And do you still get the exact same backtrace?

I did exactly as stated in the bug report:
Assemble the xfwm4 package with the disable-compositor option

Re: [SOLVED] lightdm login loop XFCE

Is there any reason you chose that fix over the xorg-server potential fix or revert of the bug introducing commit?
You modified the PKGBUILD and did the makepkg output show that the option had been recognized?
Did you then install the resulting package?

@verdog, that's not a possible fix but a desperate workaround since the compositor is prone to trigger this but unlikely alone at this.
The reasonable fix approaches are those attached by loqs to the bug. Anything else is a waste of time. The bug and segfault is in xorg-server, so xorg-server is that thing that needs to be fixed.

Have no idea what your talking about. I downloaded the bug fix that logs referred to.
fix_PKGBUILD:

pkgname=xfwm4
pkgver=4.12.4
pkgrel=2
pkgdesc="Xfce window manager"
arch=('x86_64')
url="http://www.xfce.org/"
license=('GPL2')
groups=('xfce4')
depends=('libxfce4ui' 'libwnck' 'libdrm' 'hicolor-icon-theme')
makedepends=('intltool')
source=(https://archive.xfce.org/src/xfce/$pkgname/${pkgver%.*}/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.bz2)
sha256sums=('fa74048a75649a6e92df763a3cfb706d3fed1e1a6adf567f6693325a5a6efb36')

build() {
  cd "$srcdir/$pkgname-$pkgver"

  ./configure \
    --prefix=/usr \
    --sysconfdir=/etc \
    --libexecdir=/usr/lib \
    --localstatedir=/var \
    --disable-static \
    --enable-startup-notification \
    --enable-randr \
    --disable-compositor \
    --enable-xsync \
    --disable-debug
  make
}

package() {
  cd "$srcdir/$pkgname-$pkgver"
  make DESTDIR="$pkgdir" install
}

That "desperate work around" didn't come from me, but the bug fix that I was referred to!
As you can see, it disables compositing.

Edit dropped the i option from makepkg to stop installing all of the split package.  Just update the packages you already have on the system which will be at least xorg-server and xorg-server-common

He referred to a BUG, not a "bug fix". The reporter also added a shallow work around that for some weird reason you keep insisting to be the fix. Maybe read the entire link loqs provided, including all comments…

Re: [SOLVED] lightdm login loop XFCE

I tend to agree that my multiple attempts to explain to you that the bug is not in xfce but in xorg and pointing you to the patches loqs attached to the link he provided were evidently completely wasted on you, thus of course "worthless".

I note that you are sparing with two very well respected members of the forums who are trying to warn you that your fix is really a hack that is (in my opinion) quite fragile and subject to breakage.  Maybe we are all wrong, for your sake, I hope this works.  But they are trying to get you to look at the broader picture.  Don't burn bridges in case your fix should flop.

I am very sorry for my reaction. I didn't have the knowledge to apply that "fix".

That's beside the point. I should have waited out my impulse. I've regretted it ever since. No excuse for stupid.

Seth you have been the most helpful user here. Your the last person I want to offend. I have noticed all you help to me and others.
I would have replied earlier, but I needed to get over my embarrassment.

Archlinux forums are one of the best. The mods are very active in controlling topics. I was expecting to see this topic end up the the trash bin.

I will try and do better.
