grub_uefi [SOLVED]

Something really weird is happening to my Thinkpad x220. I had arch installed on this laptop and everything worked fine. Then as much as I did not want to go back to windows I was forced to (work related). So I said OK I'll do dual boot. I wiped the hard drive following the dual boot guide that says install windows first and then arch. Windows 7 64bit is now installed on my thinkpad and it works as it should, but then I tried to install arch and the installation went smooth, but I was never able to get grub to ask me which OS to load. Boot goes directly to windows.

I thought this background was relevant to what I'm gonna ask now. After wiping the whole hard drive several times I still see "grub_uefi" as one of the Boot Priority Order in Bios > Startup. This thing is freaking me out, coz then I tried to remove the SSD from laptop and went to BIOS and it's still there. What is going on? How can it still show up in BIOS when SSD is not even in the laptop at all?

I tried windows 7 recovery tool. Went ahead and Bootrec.exe /FixBoot      and then    Bootrec.exe /FixMbr. Still there...
Could anyone help?

Re: grub_uefi [SOLVED]

I can't answer your entire question, but UEFI boot entries are stored in the motherboard, not the hard drive.  So wiping the drive or even removing it will have no effect on the entries stored on the motherboard.

Re: grub_uefi [SOLVED]

Did you properly reinstall GRUB on the second attempt? Also in general in order to be less freaked out you will probably want to read: https://www.happyassassin.net/2014/01/2 … work-then/

Thanks I do need to read more about UEFI. Turns out efibootmgr can actually modify boot entries. My problem was that I had locked boot order changes in BIOS and efibootmgr was not able to overwrite the previously locked data.

For anyone who has this problem, disable Boot Order Lock in BIOS.

Re: grub_uefi [SOLVED]

Please do create your own thread, and include more details, specifically which button (or rather which mainboard/laptop model you are refering to)
