[SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

17th of July 2018: Solved by myself. See edit on last post how I did it!

I migrated my M.2-SSD, HDD and RAM to a new Notebook (GL62 7RD).
Well, after I fixed some errors trough deinstalling or downgrading packages and adding a kernel option for acpi_osi to prevent cpu lockups I finally was able to start DE's by using startx.

Beside from small problems that I will try to fix later (WiFi broken - maybe missing driver?) there is one that really bugs me and basically prevents me from being productive with this device:
When I try to start some applications from a DE they simply don't start. I tried xfce4 and lxde and there is no difference. They don't even appear in xfce4
's taskmanager. This doesn't apply for all apps, but it really bugs me cause it this even includes some common apps like xfce4-terminal.
Also many applets in xfce4 cannot run anymore; when I tried to restart them Nothing happened - so I just removed them..
Neither a reinstall of some applications that are not working nor a reset and a reinstall of xfce4 or lxde showed any difference.

Hope you can give me some hints,
Yours Thomas.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

Remove all the broken udev rules and the vbox related services for a start.

Then login to a simple X session and run one of the misbehaving programs from xterm to generate a meaningful error message.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

I removed 20-mm-blacklist-mtk.rules and 80-persistent-usb.rules and used systemctl to stop and disable vboxadd-service.service and vboxadd.service. Then I did a reboot.
I just ran startx as root to start xterm. And I entered these bold things into one of the terminals there:

mousepad (stderr)

(process:761): Gtk-WARNING **: 07:31:43.774: Locale not supported by C library.
	Using the fallback 'C' locale.
OpenGL Warning: Failed to connect to host. Make sure 3D acceleration is enabled for this VM.

xfce4-terminal (stderr)

(process:767): xfce4-terminal-WARNING **: 07:31:59.822: Locale not supported by C library.

(process:767): Gtk-WARNING **: 07:31:59.826: Locale not supported by C library.
	Using the fallback 'C' locale.
OpenGL Warning: Failed to connect to host. Make sure 3D acceleration is enabled for this VM.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

Your locale and GL setup are broken

localectl
locale
locale -a
glxinfo

Since this is in a virtual machine, you should first ensure the proper functionality of the host system, notably in the OpenGL case.

Also Jason didn't ask you to run X as root, so don't - it's not required and a really bad idea.

It's not in a VM. I am booting directly to it. Also it was set up as a normal dualboot Arch Installation on my old notebook. Later I virtualized this Installation from raw trough VirtualBox, but most of the time it just was started normally.

Yeah. But the output doesn't differ in this case (just tested it).

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

You're aware that this line then is incredibly suspicious?

OpenGL Warning: Failed to connect to host. Make sure 3D acceleration is enabled for this VM.

Anyway, if you struggle to fix locale and GL setup, please still paste the  requested output.

Maybe. Normally I don't really run gui applications outside of DE's so I don't know wether I had this before or not. It could be due to the RAW booting which not many users do cause it's considered dangerous.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

After uncommenting three german local things out of /etc/locale.conf and running locale-gen

Generating locales...
  de_DE.UTF-8... done
  de_DE.ISO-8859-1... done
  de_DE.ISO-8859-15@euro... done
Generation complete.

(And I don't get errors anymore by running locale or locale -a.)

Now in xterm only

OpenGL Warning: Failed to connect to host. Make sure 3D acceleration is enabled for this VM.

is left when I try to run the two apps. Still can't start them when I open them in xfce4 so it seems like that this one also needs to be fixed.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

Is the "Error: unable to open display" output from within an xfce session?
Also please paste your xorg log (since glxinfo might still just yell an error for broken GL)

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

The OpenGL errors are probably the result of having configured the installation for a (raw) VM and trying to boot it with the same drivers bare metal.

You have to install the correct drivers for your graphics card.

Most likely the virtualbox guest modules aren't correctly unloading when they are probed outside a VM as well. If they still cause problems after installing the graphics drivers and you want to retain the ability to use them in virtualbox, then you can either remove the modules-load.d entries and load them in a systemd service when a VM boot is detected or do the opposite and unload them if no VM is detected.

Edit: You can create a systemd service that runs only inside a virtualbox vm:

ConditionVirtualization=oracle

No. I just did it now (I have several terminal emultors installed and luckily aterm is not broken):

aterm (stdout)

name of display: :0.0

aterm (stderr)

You have to install the correct drivers for your graphics card.

The weird thing is that I ran dozens of times pacman -S xorg-drivers or the same for intel, vesa or noveau.

progandy wrote:

then you can either remove the modules-load.d entries and load them in a systemd service when a VM boot is detected

Also in /etc/modules-load.d was and is nothing (except for a config for anbox that was there)

progandy wrote:

Edit: You can create a systemd service that runs only inside a virtualbox vm:

ConditionVirtualization=oracle

There is a service in /usr/lib/systemd/system called vboxservice.service and it does contain that line. I enabled it and nothing changed.

vboxservice.service:

[Unit]
Description=VirtualBox Guest Service
ConditionVirtualization=oracle

[Service]
ExecStartPre=-/usr/bin/modprobe vboxguest
ExecStartPre=-/usr/bin/modprobe vboxvideo
ExecStartPre=-/usr/bin/modprobe vboxsf
ExecStart=/usr/bin/VBoxService -f

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

And I took a look at systemd-modules-load.service by using systemctl status. Since there is (not only) "Failed to insert 'vboxguest': No such device" and "Failed to insert 'vboxfs': No such device" I just removed virtualbox-guest-dkms and virtualbox-guest-utils. Well, this led to neither xterm nor xfce4 being able to start when I wrote startx. In the log was something with missing file for vbox so I just downgraded those two things back (thanks cache) so that I can at least start DE's again..
If you want I will remove those two again to regenerate these xorg logs.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot use a bunch of applications after migration

Since this is an optimus system, you want to read up https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Optimus, choose a usage strategy and configure that.
In any case, remove the vesa driver.

Also

vboxvideo              49152  0

I suggest you get rid of all the virtualbox-guest stuff and reboot (or ensure to unload all modules and stop all services)

This was one of the first things I tried before I even was able to start any DE on this machine - so way before I even noticed the described problem. It
s even on the german guide (https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Anleitu … stallieren) and (in short) it's written there that you can use that if you don't know which you need so that xorg chooses the correct one.

@seth OK. I will try that now. I may edit this post in an hour or in two if I get Optimus to run. Also I will append the xorg log then if it's still not working.

Disabled and removed the VirtualBox things mentioned in post #14.

Done.

Last time (on my old notebook) I was using dkms packages cause I used linux-lts; now I am not using the lts version. Shouldn't make a huge difference, but may still be worth a mention.
Since I am sitting at this for over 17 hours (checked my pacman log on GitHub gist just to see if I missed some package) I will just append some logs (obviously can't start xorg anymore). You may ask for more.

Edit 21th of June 2018: Problem still unfixed.

Edit 17th of June 2018: Fixed after some stupid attempts. This is what I've done (things that I consider non-necessary are red):

(if I write "removed" I basically just renamed things if they aren't packages that I could reinstall from cache again but files or folders)
First I tried to got those desktop environments running. I copied the default xinitrc with cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc so that I could start with the integrated graphic card which is easier than to try to fix my problem and get the nvidia things done at the same time.
Then I generated a xorg.config with Xorg :0 -configure and commenting that glx out at modules section, then coping the file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. But the problem of not starting programs was still here.
After a lot of tries with reinstalling vbox and deinstalling etc. at some point I was somehow able to boot with the default xinitrc after deinstalling nvidia things. But problem obviously still unsolved.
The error I always got was something like libGL.so.1: VBoxOGLcrutil.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory (not 1:1 this sentence since my distro is in german and I just write things down that I remember; but it's similar to one of those in one of my previous error logs but with libGL.so.1).
So I noticed that I got some folders leftover after removing virtualbox's packages.
At first I copied (not move) libGL.so.1 from /usr/lib/ to /usr/lib/virtualbox but that didn't help.
Then I tried renaming libGL.so.1 and that didn't help too.

Well, yeah. But I was near to the solution. Basically I just did removed virtualbox/ and later things that I found by running a search command sudo find / -name "*VBox*"
, so then I removed /opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-5.2.8/ and /var/lib/VBoxGuestAdditions/
and then I got a new error like libGL.so.1: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: so nothing pointing to an error in coherence with virtualbox anymore, yay.
So if you didn't follow the red part it should work for you now if you have that problem too, because what was basically left for me was just to rename the renamed libGL.so.1 from /usr/lib back to it's original name.
Then I just did startx and after xfce4 launched I was able to run not only mousepad or xfce4-terminal but all other apps so far. Not only via a terminal but also by double clicking on files or by launching them from the application finder or panels. So it seems like the main problem is solved.
The only things left to do may be to resetup virtualbox somehow properly so that I can use raw booting again and the second thing would be to resetup my graphics configuration with bbswitch, etc. so that I can run applications with nvidia again when I want it. Well, also I need to copy my old xfce4 confg back cause I resetted xfce4 when I started this "adventure", but those are details I guess and I can finally work again with this installation of arch linux.
