[solved] Mouse issues in Virtualbox guest after upgrade to 4.17.2-1

Arch Linux is running as a VirtualBox guest on a Win10 host machine (latest updates & latest VirtualBox). I use fluxbox as window manager. With the latest updates (kernel to 4.17.2-1 and virtualbox-guest-modules-arch to 5.2.12-10), I have mouse issues:
- No left mouse button in all applications.
- Right mouse button *always* calls the fluxbox-menu. Also, importantly, when I click right mouse button within another application, such as firefox.

I have now downgraded to kernel 4.16.13.2 and virtualbox-guest-modules-arch to 5.2.12-6. All other packages are up to date and everything works as expected. This also means the problem is not in the package xorg-server-1.20.0-8, which is also upgraded at the same time.

Any ideas where to start troubleshooting? I cannot find anything relevant in my logs. Here is dmesg:

Re: [solved] Mouse issues in Virtualbox guest after upgrade to 4.17.2-1

I have this issue too! I'm not alone! This is extremely weird behaviour. The left mouse button works for the *oldest* X window I have, e.g. I open two X windows, the first one to show up will allow left mouse button, but not the second. I close the first, then the second is allowed. After some period of time it stops working too. I've found if I open Firefox and use Alt+F to try and open a menu, it immediately closes - similar behaviour to if a modifer key was stuck.

Anyway I'm rambling and this doesn't help diagnose things at all, I'm hoping someone can help us with this.

Re: [solved] Mouse issues in Virtualbox guest after upgrade to 4.17.2-1

I'm also experiencing this problem.
First notice, about 3-4 months ago.
Arch linux (up-to-date) host with OpenBox, Win10 as virtualbox guest.
Keyboard ain't affected, so I can always shutdown the Win VM guest, which resolves the problem, until next time.
I was not trying the right mouse click, but the left mouse click is dead (sometimes it suddenly resurrects), although the cursor moves.

I've also noticed the following behaviour (not just with FF, also with any other X app.):

Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: [solved] Mouse issues in Virtualbox guest after upgrade to 4.17.2-1

I have the same config as the OP on 2 separate devices. both had been working fine for over a year of updates. the upgrade to kernel 4.17.2 and associated packages seems to have caused the mouse issue. i managed a workaround by connecting to the affected vm via ssh, killing the xfce process, restarting xfce, then open up file browser and other applications works fine. i can then open up a terminal window and move everything around. If i reboot and launch a terminal window first, then i can no longer interact with the left mouse button and the menus don't work.

It may be that the link Lone_Wolf posted above is related though as of today, they don't seem to have resolved the issue.

Re: [solved] Mouse issues in Virtualbox guest after upgrade to 4.17.2-1

Been having the same problem with latest virtualbox and kernel 4.17.  I'm using i3 instead of openbox, and if I restart i3 (meta+shift+r), the mouse will work agian for exactly one left click, then the WM has to be restarted.

That repeatability makes for a good test case.  Can you reproduce the issue on linux-lts?

Re: [solved] Mouse issues in Virtualbox guest after upgrade to 4.17.2-1

I upgraded to kernel 4.17.3 and virtualbox-guest-modules-arch to 5.2.12-11. The mouse issues persist, but behavior is different now:
- Right mouse button not working; I cannot call Fluxbox menu. This was possible in 4.17.2.
- Middle mouse button works. This calls the Workspaces-menu.
- Left mouse button works partly, I can use it to change workspaces in the fluxbox toolbar. But I cannot click, for instance, in the workspaces menu.
Quite mysterious. I reverted back to kernel 4.16.13.2 and virtualbox-guest-modules-arch to 5.2.12-6

Re: [solved] Mouse issues in Virtualbox guest after upgrade to 4.17.2-1

https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17827#comment:33 as blacklisting vboxguest seems to fix the issue that indicates a kernel issue rather than virtualbox

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/59091#comment170946 as its an upstream kernel issue nothing will happen from a bug report on the arch bug tracker

The update to kernel 4.17.4 fixed the issue.

Confirmed that my mouse issue with fluxbox is fixed after upgrading the kernel.

Re: [solved] Mouse issues in Virtualbox guest after upgrade to 4.17.2-1

Hi,

I also got maybe a related issue. I leave my findings and the workaround here in case it is useful for someone.

Setup:
arch-linux latest as of date of posting
virtualbox: also latest.
guest: RHEL 7.6, any desktop  KDE, Gnome.

hardware: clevo 150-series, mouse-pad, + logitech mouse, double desktop

All guest additions installed.
(also note that same problem was present on previous kernels and vbox)

Symptom:

First mouse-click works, then dead, except inside the window, for example the konsole window.
Menus there might work ok. But  not on the window frame, or any other places inside the guest windows.
Outside guest window: no problem, everything nice and cool.

(Same symptoms regardless host desktop env, also regardless number of screens, mouse/keyboards attached)

Resolution:
In the guest-os, when it fails (early and always for me) Use keyboard-shortcuts, start a terminal-win, konsole etc.
xinput -list  # figure out the id of the mouse<mouse-id>,  the one with text like Generic Explorer mouse
xinput disable <mouse-id>
xinput enable <mouse-id>

... and problem solved (until next guest boot).

I found the solution reading this: post https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … 4ae20d38fb

Thanks for the contribution, however please be aware that this has already been solved, and we are a few kernel versions in.
