[SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

First Time Trying Arch Linux. Everything seems to be working nicely except battery. Installed TLP and PowerTop to monitor. Powertop is giving bizarre readings. Consumption ranges from 10W to 22W when I'm doing nothing. Initially iwlwifi was consuming like 6W but after a couple of days the display is reported to be using 8W and 40% brightness? Now my ethernet is reported to be using 3W and its not even connected. Any help  is appreciated.

Overview
----------------------------------------------

The battery reports a discharge rate of 11.5 W
The power consumed was 0.00 J
The estimated remaining time is 1 hours, 39 minutes
Summary: 1236.8 wakeups/second, 0.0 GPU ops/seconds, 0.0 VFS ops/sec and 15.8% CPU use

Re: [SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

Let's start at the basics.   Look around in the "directory" called /sys/class/power_supply.  Is there an entry for your battery?  Note that the path name may not be the same on every system.  In that directory, there are pseudo files.  On my system

Re: [SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

That all looks pretty reasonable.  Do you really have two batteries?  That could be what is confusing powertop.  Your batteries do a better job with reporting via SMBus than do mine.

Re: [SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

Yeah I have two batteries internal and external. But the battery life is so low regardless of what TLP reports, like 2-3 hours.

Re: [SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

Per battery?  Or total?

Re: [SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

Total. Its inconsistent. By inconsistent, I mean I could be doing nothing and the battery would be draining. Other times, I could be doing something and the battery wouldn't drain as much. Even during sleep the battery drains by 5-10%. I disabled wake-on-lan. Here is my current consumption. Brightness at 10%, wifi on, ethernet not connected

Re: [SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

Just to be clear: you are actually getting only 2-3 hours battery life? Or that's what the report says? I ask because I find the estimated time remaining is completely useless. It says 2 hours when I have far more; it claims 5 hours when I have far less. Completely meaningless, basically. But it bears no relation to the actual time I get.

I have a similar 2 battery set-up and notice something odd about your output. How did you get capacities of 17% and 27%? Did you remove the external battery since last recharging? On my machine, the external battery always drains first (to about 5%) and the internal one hardly drains during this time (<5%).

What does TLP tell you?

I haven't run powertop fro a while, but when I was configuring things last October, it gave me sensible output, so it did work OK with two batteries.

ewaller, do you have a new battery or is that what you meant about yours not reporting properly?

I actually get 2-3 hours. I was charging the laptop but I took off the charger just to get the uevent stats.

I'm starting to suspect its the GPU even though I turned it off with bumblebee and bbswitch.

Re: [SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

Problem seems to be sorted. For those who might face the same problem. I recalibrated powertop and set all tunables. Battery life was still weak but a bit better. PC states at PC3 and below. Then set Thunderbolt Assist Mode to enabled in the BIOS. PC8 being reached. Battery life much better but I feel like it can still improve. Appreciate the effort from those that tried to help.

Re: [SOLVED] Bad Battery on New ThinkPad T480

Hey archapex, I also have a T480 and my battery is draining within 2-3 hours as well. Can you explain exactly what you did to improve your battery? I.e. recalibrate powertop, set all tunables, PC8 being reched...what does that all entail?
