[SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

Hello all,

This is my first time installing Arch and my first time on the forums as well. I'm looking forward to spending some time here.

I just finished a fresh install of Arch, yet, instead of being prompted with the "clean" login prompt, I get:

https://imgur.com/eUvd4ij

When I manage to log in, commands like "poweroff" do not power off the machine but instead result in this:

https://imgur.com/GEIK0RF

I had to resort to hard resetting the machine by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.

The weird part is, very rarely and through no specific actions, I do not get these "link is not ready" lines and get a clean login prompt, from which I can log in to my system and the "poweroff" command shuts the machine down cleanly.

I have been scouring for a solution but after two days haven't found one, so I'm really at a loss here.

I have networkmanager, base, base-devel and vim installed, GRUB as a bootloader. I am connected via ethernet.

My NIC is a r8169 and the wireless controller is rtl8723be. Laptop model Lenovo B5400.

If you need any more information, feel free to ask. Thanks in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

The "link is not ready" log is from your journal, and strangely it's overriding and being printed over the login shell instead of staying in its place. Do the log behave the same when you manage to login and wait for a while in your user shell? (in order to test this you need to disable any X server automatic startup).

Given this, your machine is refusing to poweroff because there's still some processes that is refusing to close properly.

How did you install Arch? How many network manager are enabled?

systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled

If I stay in the shell for a while, sporadically a "link is not ready" log will pop up every 100 somewhat seconds. I don't have any xorg stuff installed.

Indeed, the weird lines in my login shell are the exact last lines from the dmesg output. If I get a "correct" login shell by chance, my dmesg output is identical, but the lines don't get thrown into my login prompt. Whether or not I get a "messed up" login prompt appears to be random.

entering

systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled

yields: (note that I only install dhcpcd afterwards in an attempt to solve the already exisiting problem)

autovt@.service
dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service
dbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher.service
dhcpcd.service
getty@.service
NetworkManager-dispatcher.service
NetworkManager.service
remote-fs.target

I installed Arch from a live USB with my laptop connect through ethernet, these were the commands I used:

timedatectl set-ntp true
fdisk /dev/sda (created 4 partitions here and wrote them to disk)
mkfs.ext /dev/sda1 (and 3 and 4)
mkswap /dev/sda2
swapon /dev/sda2

mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
mkdir /mnt/home (and boot)

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot (and sda4 to home)

pacstrap /mnt base base-devel vim

genfstab -U /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
arch-chroot /mnt

[b]pacman -S networkmanager[/b]
systemctl enable NetworkManager

pacman -S grub
grub-install --target=i386-pc /dev/sda
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

passwd

vim /etc/locale.gen
locale-gen

vim /etc/locale.conf

ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Brussels /etc/localtime

vim /etc/hostname

exit
umount -R /mnt

reboot

Re: [SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

I must admit that it looks very much like my own set, and I can't see anything wrong.

Can you post output from

cat /proc/sys/kernel/printk

15 3 3 3

In an earlier attempt to troubleshoot, I created

/etc/sysctl.d/20-quiet-printk.conf

with

kernel.printk = 3 3 3 3

Re: [SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

If there's a sysctl to set them 3333 (default should be 4414), then how do you end up with a console_loglevel of 15?
What happens for a

sysctl kernel.printk="4 4 1 4"
sysctl kernel.printk="1 1 1 1"

Edit: of course try them one by one (ie. check 4414 first and only if the messages remain showing up go to 1111)

seth wrote:

If there's a sysctl to set them 3333 (default should be 4414), then how do you end up with a console_loglevel of 15?
What happens for a

sysctl kernel.printk="4 4 1 4"
sysctl kernel.printk="1 1 1 1"

Edit: of course try them one by one (ie. check 4414 first and only if the messages remain showing up go to 1111)

these values seems to work for one session, but since I can't shutdown properly (see OP) I have to press the shutdown button for some seconds to shut down the machine.
On a reboot, the numbers seem to have reverted to 15 3 3 3.

Re: [SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

So where does the "15" stem from - hint: look into /etc/sysctl.d/ and try to remove the 20-quiet-printk.conf (I'm not sure whether the sysctl.d entries work w/o quotes)

Removing the 20-quiet-printk.conf entry and running

sysctl kernel.printk="4 4 1 4"

then rebooting results in values of 15 4 1 4

Re: [SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

4414 is the suposed default - so something™ sets the console_loglevel to 15 after 20-quiet-printk.conf adjusts/ed it.
Natural contenders would be other snippets in /etc/sysctl.d/ but actually anything can do this by invoking sysctl in some script. It especially looks like a mistake, since "15" is nonsense.

Re: [SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

man 2 syslog wrote:

   /proc/sys/kernel/printk
/proc/sys/kernel/printk is a writable file containing four integer val‐
ues that influence kernel printk() behavior when  printing  or  logging
error messages.  The four values are:

       console_loglevel
Only  messages  with  a  log level lower than this value will be
printed to the console.  The default value  for  this  field  is
DEFAULT_CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL  (7),  but it is set to 4 if the kernel
command line contains the word "quiet", 10 if the kernel command
line  contains  the  word "debug", and to 15 in case of a kernel
fault (the 10 and 15 are just silly, and equivalent to 8).   The
value  of  console_loglevel  can be set (to a value in the range
1–8) by a syslog() call with a type of 8.

Auto set to 15 by kernel fault?

I just did a fresh reinstall with the command I mentioned above, excluding the installation of the networkmanager.

First boot, I got the same error, dmesg logs jumping into my login prompt.

I did

cat /proc/sys/kernel/printk

and it yielded 15 4 1 4

Cool - "just silly" ;-)
That would certainly explain the failing shutdown, but do you see traces of one in the provided dmesg?

So there is a kernel fault happening somewhere? I don't see anything in the dmesg logs that could explain this.

Re: [SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

That is a possible and reasonable solution, though I neither see traces of a fault.
However there's a fault injection function, ie. a module can trigger this w/o there actually being any "real" fault.

Wild guess: blacklist iTCO_wdt

I tried this to no avail. However, I decided to run dmesg again and got quite a different output. Perhaps the priorly posted dmesg log was of a non-faulty instance.

Here is the last dmesg:

Re: [SOLVED] dmesg output in login screen

I blacklisted thinkpad_acpi and ran 2 successful tests where kernel faults didn't happen. I'm running some post-install scripts now which are installing my wm, X etc. Let's hope that was it.

A bit weird that it tried calling a Thinkpad Battery Extension module while I'm on a Lenovo B5400 isn't it?

This has been an educational journey, thank you for all the spontaneous help, I'm looking forward to becoming part of this community.

Thanks for all the help too! This was definitely the golden tip!
