Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

This was tested mainly with Firefox and dwarffortress. On Firefox, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then it reverts to the last frame stored in the gpu buffer, then blank again. This happens 2-3 times. Firefox runs but, every single operation you do with it causes the same issue. There are no entries on the Xorg logs when it happens because apparently it restarts the server.

On dwarffortress, the game runs and you can hear audio but, the same happens with Firefox but the session never manages to recover from it and the screen starts blinking constantly. By instinct, I decided to install lib32-gtk3 and now dwarffortress runs, the screen goes blank, then it throws you back at SDDM. Every time you login, a popup that says "kmserver: couldn't start service" appears and you're sent back to SDDM.

For Firefox, the issue can be fixed by closing it. For dwarffortress, the only "fix" is to restart the PC.

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

Hardware:
- AMD C60 CPU
-Radeon HD5450 with xf86-video-ati

Jornal logs can't be grabbed (or I'm doing it wrong) because the display server is closed and restarted multiple times (generally 3-4 times).

You should still be able to switch to a tty and redirect into a file, or after reproducing the problem and rebooting get a log of the previous boot with journalctl -b-1

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

And...I decided to switch to my other monitor to get journals without several invalid EDID messages for my other monitor and...both programs work normally. I recall seeing some ring issues in the journal when the broken EDID monitor was connected.

This is one of the last entries on it:

You might also want to post a xorg log, and please don't truncate the output, full context is often relevant. Just ignore the pager with --no-pager or redirect into a file, and post the entire output.

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

Is your system up-to-date? If so, how have you "fixed" dwarffortress, as the current version in [community] segfaults without manual intervention. I am also unsure why lib32-gtk3 changed anything, as modern df doesn't use 32-bit libs, and has never used gtk3.

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

Here's the journal https://pastebin.com/Pf9nkr13
Here's both recent (Xorg.log) and old (Xorg.log.old)
https://pastebin.com/Xc9YwM6R
https://pastebin.com/AayVm2bw

My system is up to date (last update was done yesterday). Well, I don't know why installing lib32-gtk3 (after doing the fix described in the bug report for dwarf fortress) makes the game run.

That works but makes me unable to use the monitor without a functioning EDID, as it pushes a resolution and refresh rate it can't reproduce.

The EDID data is broken anyway (see the xorg log) - do you have an external EDID file?
Otherwise: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xr … esolutions

No. I couldn't find it for the particular monitor (A rebranded 19" LG Flatron W1942S). And I have a script that does what the wiki describes. xf86-video-ati pushes the particular monitor at 1024x768 when X starts. Without the driver, the monitor is pushed to some resolution none of the models of this range can display when X starts (I believe 1600x1200@94Hz), making impossible to fix the resolution. If I set the resolution at boot time, the monitor that has a working EDID (A 17" LG Flatron L1753T) might be forced into a resolution it can't display (1440x900@75Hz, its max resolution being 1280x1024@75Hz).

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

Did you see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xr … esolutions ?
You don't need (nor actually should) write a screen section, just use the output name (VGA-0 etc. as displayed by xrandr) as Identifier in the Monitor sections.
==> nB. that the output names might vary between the modesetting and the radeon driver!!

You can also "remote control" the X11 server from a linux console or via ssh (just "export DISPLAY=:0")

My main concern here is having the monitor that has a working EDID be forced into a resolution it can't display when X starts in case I want to switch to it.

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

Let's see whether I do understand your situation:
You have two monitors (one has a broken EDID, the other is fine) but you don't use them together, but they time-share the same GPU output (you plug them into the same jack)?
Then you casewise run a script to add and select a modeline for the broken one?

1st off: no real need to be concerned about the monitor - if they receive a signal they don't understand, they will just reject it (and you get a nice "no signal" OSD message)
2nd: you will always be able to boot the system w/ the "nomodeset" parameter. You get a very low resolution output and no graphical interface, but you will get a console and output to fix things.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-vga_0_modes.conf

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "VGA-0"
    # 1440x900 74.98 Hz (CVT 1.30MA) hsync: 70.64 kHz; pclk: 136.75 MHz
    Modeline "1440x900_75.00" 136.75 1440 1536 1688 1936 900 903 909 942 -hsync +vsync
    Option "DefaultModes" "false"
EndSection

This should™ disable the VGA modes added by default and add a 1440x900@75Hz mode. Your working EDID should™ feed more modes into the system and also announce a preferred mode. On the broken EDID, the added 1440x900@75Hz is the only available mode and therefore should™ be picked.

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

What happens is something a bit strange:

https://expirebox.com/download/01f2c436 … 2b57d.html (journal file is over 1 MB in size)

Not only the broken monitor completely ignores that file, it keeps attempting a refresh rate of 123 Hz, then complaining it's outside of scale. When you boot with "nomodeset", the boot sequence gets stuck in the UMS module warning. Switching to another terminal causes the screen to rapidly switch between the first terminal and the one you have selected. Input is also captured when the switch happens, so you cannot, at least not without a lot of patience, log in and see what the problem is. There's no Xorg log because X never starts. Working EDID monitor just boots normally.

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

The journal spends most of the time w/ sddm restarting, there's no indication that the X11 does NOT start succesfully.
=> Is this w/ a nomodeset boot? Do you have xf86-video-vesa installed?
     * If not: disable sddm and try to "startx xterm", (startx comes with "xorg-xinit")
=> At what point does the 123Hz frequency occur? The xorg configlet won't apply before the X11 server is started, so it cannot be "ignored" before (or if the server would never start)
Anything that happens before/without an X11 server is NOT affected by removing xf86-video-ati at all. The driver is exclusively for X11, the radeon kernel module is in charge before.

Instead of booting nomodeset, try https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … ramebuffer
You may also try https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … figuration

The Xorg.0.log.old is completely blank when you cat it.

The rapid switching is with nomodeset as a boot parameter. xf86-video-vesa is not installed. The only video driver installed was xf86-video-ati.

The 123Hz frequency occurs when SDDM starts.

Re: Launching certain GTK based apps on KDE crashes Kwin and Xorg

Ok, Xorg won't start w/o modesetting, but SDDM doesn't figure that and tries over and over and over again.
If you want to boot w/ nomodeset, boot into the multi-user.target, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … _boot_into

However if you boot w/ modeset support, Xorg will start. Whether it then causes some 123Hz frequency or not - it will write a log. It will even cause a running X11 server, you just cannot see it on your monitor.
The log will reveal whether the configlet is parsed and how it deals with it.

In doubt take SDDM out of the equation, boot into the multi-user.target and "startx xterm" (the log will then however be written into ~/.local/share/xorg/)
