powerline fonts not working correctly when installing from repo or aur

I get these weird boxed from powerline in urxvt that doesn't go away by installing powerline-fonts nor powerline-console-fonts. I managed to fix it with https://github.com/powerline/fonts but why didn't the packages fix the issue?

The powerline-fonts package installs fonts from https://github.com/powerline/powerline, whereas you installed fonts from https://github.com/powerline/fonts. Both seem to be different repositories providing different fonts. As an alternative to manually installing fonts from the second repository, you could use the powerline-fonts-git package from AUR.

powerline-console-fonts seems to install an old version of https://github.com/powerline/fonts.
