It seems that my sound is working fine in mplayer, amarok, and xmms, but has suddenly stopped working on the flash vidoes on youtube.com. Also, the little volume control slider on the bottom of any youtube flash video is now missing. These videos where working fine until right after the pacman -Syu upgrade. Is the flashplugin module now busted or maybe youtube went to flash8? Anybody else having this problem with youtube?

Yes. I assumed it was a youtube upgrade that broke things since the linux flash plugin shouldn't have any updates.
A workaound would be to install the firefox video downloader plugin and then playing the downloaded *.flv files through VLC or mplayer (VLC works better than mplayer with flv files for whatever reason). This is kind of a pain in the ass. I hate proprietary codecs/plugins.

I'm pretty sure that the problem is due to youtube's upgrades. If you delete your ~/.macromedia folder, you'll get your sound back. However, fiddling with the sound in the youtube interface will probabily break it again, so after it's fixed, no fiddling!

Yeah, since youtube has this fancy "overlay" feature on the video's this happens for me, too. Nice incentive to check out the video downloader extension.

Sure enough, deleting my ~/.macromedia folder made the sound come back... but as soon as I touched the volume control area again, the sound was gone again. I also noticed that had added the fancy overlays... which also apparently brought along this volume bug with it.
I think we should all contact youtube at
http://youtube.com/contact
and tell about this problem.
In the meantime, I'll check out the other extension.
