Totem seems to have some serious redrawing problems. Unless I switch from or to fullscreen the black bars will not redraw. So the control bar that is supposed to disappear stays right there only frozen. Also sometimes overlapping windows will cause uglyness.
Anyone else have this problem? Any fixes?

I don't have those issues, try changing the video output in the desktop menu->preferences->select multimedia system, video tab (it surely is different, I'm translating from spanish here) and seeing if anything changes. If it does improves it might be a problem not with totem, but with the video drivers and their support for xv...

Thanks for your help. I had already tried that. Neither option fixes the problem. Totem has always had these redrawing problems, they just seem to be a lot worse now. This is a new pc so I don't now if it's just the new version of Totem or something else.
edit. I just tried the nv video driver instead of nvidia and it didn't change anything.
edit2. Ok, I was using totem-xine. I've installed totem (gstreamer) and that seems to fix it. So it's a problem with Xine, most likely. The problem is that gstreamer seems to have a hard time using the win32 codecs. Can somebody help me with that? (Either that or help me fix the Xine problem.)

did you install gstreamer0.10-base, bad, good, ugly, evil, malicious, and everything alike?

Everything but evil and malicious (was that a joke? i couldn't tell). Pitfdll seems to be the thing I need, is it included in one of those?

Pitfdll for gstreamer0.10 anybody? Seems kinda important since half the codecs (win32) only work through pitfdll.
I can't find it anywhere but I know Ubuntu has it so...

Why not using mplayer?

Because its GUI is terrible.

IMHO, it doesn't matter at all.

Well that's your opinion. Expound it all you want but some people will still disagree.

Point is ,at least, it works.

Recommending a different app when someone wants something else is not the proper way of helping.
"Why doesn't <appname> work?" "Use <better>"
It's the same as recommending a different distro when a user perhaps doesn't know how to do that exact thing.

Alright, so here is another recommendation is
use totem-1.4.1 from garnome-2.14.2.1, it's dependency is clean.

Thanks. I'll try it.
I use Totem because of its Gnome GUI and good controls. MPlayer sucks that way. And from experience I find the Xine backend way better. GStreamer might be even better if I could find the damn pitfdll thingy.

That one doesn't work with GStreamer0.10. Already tried it. From the sourceforge site it seems that pitfdll hasn't been released for 0.10. But Ubuntu has it so the source is floating around somewhere I guess.

pitfdll works ok for me with gstreamer0.10.......
fck art, lets dance.

How did you do it? When I tried to compile it told me gstreamer wasn't installed.

Ok so, I grabbed the source from an ubuntu repo It compiles great and combined with gstreamer0.10-bad it actually plays wmvs. But some of them play really choppy....but hardly any cpu usage. Maybe I need more codecs. (It never ends)

Ok, so, I updated Totem to the latest version I could find on their ftp (1.5.4). Makes no difference for Xine or Gstreamer backend. The Xine thing is definitely a Totem bug, but the bug report (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302419) has recieved little attention.
I don't any other video player that uses GStreamer0.10 so I can't test if the the pitfdll slow/choppy -ness is a GStreamer thing or Totem thing.
I also upgraded pitfdll to cvs. No difference.
I am frustrated. But I'll use the fugly gxine for wmvs for the time being.

¿why don't you use xine-gui instead?... oh!, and btw, I've found mplayer to be the one that has less problems with wmv files.

So many half-baked projects. It's a shame. Totem always has shit. Kde doesn't even have a respectable media/video player even though it packs three attempts. Kaffeine is even worse then Totem, bloated and always has random crashes (the old version was good but is completely broken now). KMPlayer has a suckass inconsistent interface, might as well use MPlayer...
Xine-ui and MPlayer are good from a practical point of view. But both have horrible GUI's that don't fit in anywhere (check the font size in Xine-ui ).
And the list goes on and on... If they would just clean out the bugs on Totem.

Yeah, streaming media stuff is a problem in Linux. Totem is a good start - the plugin really does work now - but the Xine branch is buggy and GStreamer still has issues with audio stuff.

Here is my case, i don't need mplayer GUI at all, just click movie/audio file in Nautilus 2.14.1, and when i want to see/listen several files, i make list.
this is garnome's special force ;-)
