Using GPUs without Optimus on MUXed laptop

Hello,

please is it possible to use Nvidia GPU on laptop with MUXed GPU scheme without utilizing Optimus? I own Dell Precision Mobile Workstation 7710 with Intel Graphics and Nvidia Quadro. I have option to disable Intel Graphics (and use Nvidia exclusively) in BIOS.

$ lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Iris Pro Graphics P580 [8086:193d] (rev 09)
Subsystem: Dell Iris Pro Graphics P580 [1028:06da]
	Kernel driver in use: i915
	Kernel modules: i915

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GM204GLM [Quadro M5000M / M5000 SE] [10de:13f8] (rev a1)
	Subsystem: Dell GM204GLM [Quadro M5000M / M5000 SE] [1028:06da]
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia
	Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia

However I would like to have both GPUs available in my system, and use only one of them - for example Nvidia GPU (later I would like to setup virtual machine that would utilize second GPU). Once both GPUs are enabled in BIOS I can't seem to configure Xorg to use Nvidia directly - without using Optimus. I believe it should be possible to use Nvidia directly on laptop with MUXed scheme. Please does anyone know how could I configure Xorg to work without Optimus? Thanks.

Monty

Re: Using GPUs without Optimus on MUXed laptop

Open up that laptop and try to find the video output of the Nvidia card. You're likely to find none, because the output is most likely connected to the Intel chip. Optimus setups with a BIOS switch do some software trickery to bypass the Intel and pretend there is only one card. Short answer: The Intel chip has to be turned off, so the actual output jack can be passed through to the Nvidia card.

Optimus sucks. A real Ezekiel 23:20.

Re: Using GPUs without Optimus on MUXed laptop

Thanks for answer. I thought there are separate outputs from each GPU being muxed for both internal display and output as described here:

I thought I might use Nvidia for my base system and Intel Graphics for virtual machine running on top of it. However I don’t want to use Optimus or Bumblebee to do so.
That means there is no way to use Nvidia without Optimus once Intel is enabled in BIOS? If so, that really sucks...
