I'm running Linux 4.17.6-1-ARCH on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 2) using Legacy Boot. There is a BIOS option USB 3.0. If it is set to Enabled or Auto, my USB 3.0 drive is not detected (i.e. it doesn't show up with dmesg or lsusb). Is there a better way to make my drive usable than completely disabling USB 3.0 support?
What is mentioned under No USB storage devices are acknowledged by the system, might be related. But there seems to be no option to enable (X/E)CHI Handoff in the BIOS.

Maybe USB3 only works well in UEFI mode? Try to boot the arch install image in UEFI and test your usb3 drive.

Is there an option to select which OS is installed ?
If so, try selecting windows 7 .
Edit:
It may sound weird, but there have been some reports where USB3 under legacy boot to linux only worked when windows 7 was selected.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
(A works at time B) && (time C > time B ) ≠ (A works at time C)

In UEFI mode (with Linux 4.16.12-1-ARCH) it also works only after disabling USB 3.0 in the BIOS.

The only related option I found is OS Optimized Defaults, which mentions Windows 8. But enabling it doesn't help (only checked with Legacy Boot so far).
