Hi,
After a long overdue upgrade (a notebook missing for an year) I've lost a fair amount of ordinary icons. Less with gnome apps, more with plasma. Reinstallation of obvious dependencies won't help. An app notably stripped of icons is krusader. DE is fluxbox, KDE installed but never really used due to the lack of RAM.
What would be the proper approach to this trouble?

What do you mean by ordinary icons? The actual application icons you see in application launcher? or the icons used in the user interface?
What icon theme are you using? Did you try switching the theme?

User interface icons. With SpaceFM it's the pdf file icon, for instance; with Krusader, most everything. Icon theme packages are there, installed and reinstalled. I lost them because of a difficult upgrade. I cannot tell how did I manage to kill the icons. No big leal, considering I could have lost the whole system. I still hope to put things to rights.

Again, did you try switching the icon theme? Is there difference between icons installed in system directories vs. ~/? Have you tried regenerating the icon caches with gtk-update-icon-cache? Any errors in system logs?

No, I didn't try to switch the icon theme. The icons seen under root are also in bad shape. Following your hint, I tried to regenerate the caches. No difference. Which log would you suggest?
UPD:
It's actually a bit better now. I've got some pdf icon back. Krusader is still in bad shape. It depends on kiconthemes which does not look like an ordinary icon theme package.
