I run Ubuntu on another partition on the same pc, and I found it to be reacting and multitasking better. I think this is caused by the kernel, which has many performance patches aimed at desktop usage. It even feels faster than the (better-than-default) beyond kernel (sorry James Embarassed). (And yes, the Ubuntu kernel I use there is the i686 optimized one)

Ubuntu really did surprise me on how fast it really is. It's pretty impressive. There's some things that Arch has performed better for me though. As well as I have more RAM free with Arch, which helps out with speed issues in some applications.

I don't really think there is that much difference in i368 and i686, maybe a .0001% performance gain?

Yeah, one of the first things I do when I install Ubuntu is get the k7 kernel (assuming I'm on a k7-based machine, of course). I don't really notice much of a speed increase either.

Ubuntu fast? Are you kidding me?  I personally thought it was slow, even with the i686 optimised kernel

Bison is right, *Buntu is incredibly slow. sad

Komodo, I know *exactly* how you feel. I know, because once I had an ATI graphics card too. The thing pissed me off in so many ways that it nearly ended up being crushed (I've traded it since with someone who still uses Winbloze). Trust me, once you put an nVidia in your PC, you'll never, ever think of going back! 8)

Just be glad I'm considerate for all the low-bandwidth users of these forums. Otherwise I'd blow my avatar up to two or three times its size just for soloport. tongue

Detto. We need to form an alliance. We need to show soloport who's boss around here. It'll be called the "Musician with long hair and glasses alliance." All that is required is a picture of a person wearing glasses, sporting long hair, and holding an instrument (preferably musical) of some sort. It doesn't have to be you; it could be some guy you found on google image search or perhaps you can even use my handsome avatar.
