I've made my own keyboard layout. But now some keys are in different positions, like Ctrl-S is hard to reach.
Is there a way to remap these globally? I use openbox, and xorg. I've tried xbindkeys, with xbindkeys -k first, then pressing Ctrl-S it shows
"NoCommand"
m:0x4 + c:26
Control + s
adding that to .xbindkeysrc and changing Control + s to something else doesn't make that shortcut to work.
There is also openbox rc, but I don't know the exact action and command I should use in command section.

If you used "no command" in your ~/.xbindkeysrc then the bound keys will give no command, Remember to pkill xbindkeys and restart it with
xbindkeys &after an edit of the rc file, obkeys is another alternative for openbox it has a nice GTK UI.

Just to be sure: you altered the keyboard layout and now let's say eg. "S" and "U" are swapped. So as a next step you'd like to make ctrl+u save files and attempt to do this by making it fire ctrl+s?
You can probably xbindkey ctrl+u to "xdotool keydown ctrl key s keyup ctrl", but be careful not to create cycles.
Also maybe re-think your keyboard layout ;-)

I guess there are no commands for saving etc. only windows management

I want 'Ctrl-U' to be new Ctrl-S, and Ctrl-S to be unbind entirely. If I send Ctrl-S by Ctrl-U with xdotool, how would I send Ctrl-U if need be? It only creates huge binding mess.
Are these shortcuts hardcoded in apps or in the kernel? Can't xorg be tweaked for all other apps to honor the changes?

nah It's perfect. damn qwerty! making me suffer even by not using it!

Anyone on i3? can Ctrl-S be rebound there?
I'm still trying to figure out how it works. let's take leafpad for example. It doesn't have shortcuts config, therefore it should listen to WM or X for keycodes right?
But what do I put in rc.xml, tried something like this, reload openbox, didn't work.
<keybind key="C-D">
<action name="Save"/>
</keybind>

The reaction to the shortcuts is handled by the clients, some may be configrable, some may not.
xbindkeys is the wrong tool to make eg. leafpad save a document for ctrl+u, you'll have to re-bind the shortcut in each client that allows it.
The big desktop environments (and actually toolkits, but they're not directly configurable) provide a set of default actions for shortcuts and if the application uses this action rather than handling shortcuts by itself, you can impact a dozen applications w/ one setting.
For leafpad et al, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GT … _shortcuts - but that's PER PROCESS (ie. leafpad won't even save the setting)

I guess the only logical solution for me is not to use any apps that are not supporting shortcut edits.
I will mark as solved, but it really isn't, because of the unix way... let's see if systemd fix this issue in the future.. ![]()

I am having the exact same problem. I found this code that can potentially be used with Wayland: https://github.com/philipl/evdevremapkeys
but is there really no way to easily remap keyboard events?
