[solved] video playback issue in browsers and desktop applications

Hi,

I am running archlinux in Virtualbox and I cannot make video playback working neither in browsers (tested firefox, Gnome Web, Midori, Chromium) nor in desktop applications (tested totem and mplayer)

Only vlc works properly.

The problem I get is that video hangs shortly after starting (only ca 300ms visible). By moving the video cursor position I get the same behaviour: correctly displayed some frames and then the video get stuck again.

It seems to me it is some problem related to the codec.

Some further info that might help:

*) this only happens in the virtual machine (at least the one I set up)

*) guest modules installed through pacman

*) already tried to enable 3d acceleration in host

ffmpeg       installed
gstreamer  installed
gst-*           installed

glxdemo works fine

some glxinfo output

Re: [solved] video playback issue in browsers and desktop applications

You gave everything but the actual video format and the codec used...

Re: [solved] video playback issue in browsers and desktop applications

Video format seems not to be the actual cause, I tried MPEG-4 and webm.
Maybe the decoding phase is not the problem because I am actually able to see some frames at any point of the video before it stops.
As said this happens both in the browser for example when trying to see a video on youtube or any html5 video content or in desktop applications with exception of vlc.

Further ffmpeg is able to convert videos with no issue.
The only problem seems to be the playback.

After many tests I found out the solution. Installing gtk2 and rebooting seems to remove the problem.
Although I cannot explain why that happens as gtk2 is required by none of my packages.
