Announce Perl version upgrade on home page?

Perl went from 5.26 to 5.28 in recent days. Now all the vendor_perl paths (which encode the version number) are broken for people who have built their own perl packages, and they need to rebuild those packages.

That should be worth an announcement on the home page?

Thankfully there is a warning from the Perl package install script, but still ...

You have answered your own question.

People are always asking for more announcements on the home page for changes that they think warrant them. If all of them were given that sort of weight, then we would need a scrolling widget to display them all.

Far too many people ignore the announcements as it is, promoting more of them will not fix anything, it will just devalue the channel.

Re: Announce Perl version upgrade on home page?

There was a warning from the install script.  There is a big bright box in the wiki page for AUR packages.  There is no need for a front page news item as there is no news for supported packages.

I would like a frontpage news post to announce that the sun rose in the east today.

Only post sunrise news if it includes a photo of the sunrise, as well as a photo of the food you ate for breakfast, and optionally, an attached selfie.

Re: Announce Perl version upgrade on home page?

Basically move archlinux.org to instagram.

To give an actual answer, in the past there have been announcements for perl version upgrades. No idea why these have been left out this time; I guess the developers were tired of posting the same thing continously and decided on an upgrade message instead.

Re: Announce Perl version upgrade on home page?

Alad, the messages in the past required some user intervention for officially supported packages, right?

That is not the case here.  Notes that someone may need to rebuild unsupported non-repo packages and/or their own personally built projects is just not in the scope of the front page news.

EDIT: perhaps the last perl announcement was similar.  *shrug* I don't know perl.

Re: Announce Perl version upgrade on home page?

Well, see for example: https://www.archlinux.org/news/perl-updated-to-520/

Going over the news archives, I also see https://www.archlinux.org/news/perl-lib … th-change/ which already explicitely mentioned Perl 5.28 and 5.30. So there's your answer OP.

Re: Announce Perl version upgrade on home page?

Past news posts about perl were due to perl deciding to segfault for *any* perl program, if you failed to rebuild custom packages. That's no longer the case though. smile

Re: Announce Perl version upgrade on home page?

[/snark]

The problem as I see it: a change like this causes unexpected, sudden work, for certain people like me when they perform a system upgrade. I don't mind the work ("rebuilding all my packages"); I do mind the unexpected.

I cannot really avoid the unexpected because only once perl had been upgraded did it tell me about it. Unless somebody announces it somewhere else, such as the home page, or, yes, instagram, if that's the preferred channel.

Just a thought ...

You could always subscribe to the dev ML where all major rebuilds are discussed well in advance...

Re: Announce Perl version upgrade on home page?

It's in the wiki.  How is it unexpected?  Pacman tells you want it is going to update and asks you to confirm before it does.  The post install message really has no content other than "hey pay attention, perl was updated", you knew it was going to be updated before that.
