I've performed the same KDE install many times on many machines, but today's box is not cooperating:
pacman -S xorg-server sddm plasma-meta konsole
systemctl enable sddm
The screen goes blank, showing only a underscore cursor. The journal:

Something goes pretty wrong here. This is a Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU D2550, and its only other oddity is that I need to provide kernel argument
video=LVDS-1:d
to keep having a console for the second half of the boot process. I never quite understood what this does and how this helps, but perhaps this is related?
Any ideas?

Remove SDDM from the equation and post the Xorg log.

Did you see the Xorg stack traces in the middle? (thought the context might be important)

Yes. But I'd like to see what happens if you start X without another layer of (buggy) abstraction.

Terminal, from "X > /tmp/log 2>&1". Played with some command-line flags, but basically the same behavior:

This looks like a graphics driver/potentially to old/weak of a card to drive the modesetting driver properly issue. Try xf86-video-intel and maybe run a more low power oriented desktop

I can't get this to work, although I seem to remember that this hardware used to work in this configuration. Tried xf86-video-intel, tried wayland, everything crashes. Well, not terribly important, it is old hardware.
