[SOLVED] Proposal for native Flightgear pkgs - Alternative solution

Hi users,

this post is becoming quite outdated. For recent solutions read from post #17 below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi developers,

first of all thanks to the Community for his contribution.

Just a question: is there a chance to have native Flightgear metapackage?

Flightgear is the best free flight simulator for Linux used also to train real pilots. It's very realistic and always improving but has a defect: it is HUGE.

I know there is an AUR package but compiling about 1.5 GB several times a year is a very very long job especially in not so fast computers.

An adapted metapackage could be the solution with already compiled packages.

For example Fedora Rawhide has always fresh packages as you can see here:

https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages … r/overview

Please let me know if that is feasible.

Thanks you all and have a nice day.

Hi developers

This is the forum mostly for troubleshooting - it is not an effective way to communicate with devs.  If you wanted to reach the devs, mailing lists would be better.  But in this case, you shouldn't do that either.

I don't think you mean metapackage do you?  Why would it be a metapackage?  I think you just mean a regular package; you are hoping what is currently in the AUR could be available in the main repos, right?

If so, see here

If you instead mean just using upstream provided precompiled binaries - you can do that in the AUR.  Make a flightgear-bin package if such binaries are available.

Flightgear was dropped from the official repos earlier this year because of lack of interest from the people who maintain the packages. I seriously doubt that situation has changed.

Re: [SOLVED] Proposal for native Flightgear pkgs - Alternative solution

By metapackage do you mean repackaging fedora's build of flightgear?

Re: [SOLVED] Proposal for native Flightgear pkgs - Alternative solution

@Trilby

Are you sure you read my post with attention?

I wrote to developers some time ago but I have never received an answer. That's why I asked to community.

A metapackage is a Package that depends on a group of packages that relate to a common activity, in this case Flightgear with flighgear-bin, flightgear-data, etc (those coming from Debian or Ubuntu know what it is)

I know and I wrote myself there is Flightgear in AUR but... have you tried to compile it?

@loqs

Yours could be a solution if someone had enough time and knowledge to adapt Fedora's packages with tools like 'alien'.

Other suggestions are welcome. In the meantime, good night everyone.

Packages in the official repositories can not have dependencies in AUR.

@loqs

Maybe I was misunderstood.

Forget AUR!

For the reasons I explained in my first post, I wish an official Flightgear Arch package you can find here: https://www.archlinux.org/packages/

Yes, I did.  Perhaps next time you should write it with attention.

There is no such package as flightgear-bin, if there was, your issue would be addressed.  A meta-package would not address your issue in any way even if one could be made to depend on AUR packages.

Re: [SOLVED] Proposal for native Flightgear pkgs - Alternative solution

@Trilby

I'm not a newbie even if the moderator moved my post here.

I know there isn't a flightgear-bin: you mentioned it in post #2. I mentioned the name you used to indicate the binary that starts the simulator: does the 'fgfs' file tell you something?

But... have you ever installed and used Flightgear?

I remember you that trolling is forbidden in the forum. If you forgot it please read code of conduct: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … o_trolling

You're not helping the community: please if you haven't got a solution don't answer. Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Proposal for native Flightgear pkgs - Alternative solution

Stop talking about metapackages, they have nothing to do with this at all. You're asking about packages getting into the official repos, and this has already been answered.

Are you really telling a retired moderator to read the code of conduct and "stop trolling"?

Your initial post is unclear, so there's either a language barrier or an understanding barrier. You're continuing to use confusing terminology despite that.

Also, no form of flightgear will be added to the repos, sorry. We removed it because the person who used to maintain it found it a burden to do so and wished to stop, and as a result it was actually orphaned and *no one* was maintaining it.

Re: [SOLVED] Proposal for native Flightgear pkgs - Alternative solution

For those still interested in this topic, here you may find already compiled packages:

https://repo.itmettke.de/aur/aur-archlinux/x86_64/

First install flightgear-data-2018.2.2-1-any.pkg.tar.xz and then flightgear-2018.2.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz et voila now you have installed Flightgear 2018.2.2.

Re: [SOLVED] Proposal for native Flightgear pkgs - Alternative solution

Hi virtual pilots,

solution at post #16 doesn't work anymore as simgear needs old openscenegraph-3.4 no more present in repositories.

I suggest you to read post at https://forum.manjaro.org/t/simgear-ins … ails/63899 where great FabioLolix user found a solution with patched AUR pkgbuilds and ALREADY COMPILED packages!

Have a nice flight!

openmw also had problems with osg 3.6.3 , there's now a osg 3.4 package in repos again.

Can we not recommend building and installing software without pacman? Why not post an updated PKGBUILD instead? What's the problem with incrementing the pkgver in the existing PKGBUILD?
