Re: log for rm actions?

You can safely delete this file. It just saves a log of your previous console commands inside the bash shell.

Re: log for rm actions?

hm ... I am sure *someone* has rm'ed a bunch of files, but .bash_history is rather empty in all accounts. Wtf, someone wiped out the history, including doing history -c for not logging this actions.

Arrh. As there is no sign of foreign input from outer space, I must sue my kids. But as they are not root, and no sudoers, I should hand them out the maschine ... I am impressed.

If they used a livecd they can become root on the livecd, mount the partitions and delete whatever they want... Without even having to delete the history.

Re: log for rm actions?

how could this happen - I have a dozen ideas how it could. What makes me more curious, is, how could THEY manage it. You know, they are kids, 12 and 14 years old and soccer hooked. They are -- well, seemed to be - no nerds, greyhats etc. yikes

Potential drive failure?  Bad sectors or something starting to appear?

14 is a good age to start breaking things (16-17 is a good age to start fixing them...). Perhaps they have a nasty little friend that wanted to show off?

Re: log for rm actions?

Maybe someone has used a graphical filemanager to remove the files -> no trace left in .bash_history
