[SOLVED] lost power during pacman -Syu now X server won't start

Greetings,
I was doing a `pacman -Syu` update when I lost power. I was able to use the recovery iso to finish the update, but now when I try to `startkde` I get
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server

or `startx`

xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)

I tried reinstalling xorg-server and plasma, but I am still stuck in tty2-7, while tty1 is stuck trying to start X11.

Is there a way to fix this, or do I need to wipe the / partition and start over?

Re: [SOLVED] lost power during pacman -Syu now X server won't start

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … an_upgrade

Edit: Ah, blast - you did that ;-)

=> First check "pacman -Qkk" for potentially broken packages. If there's nothing suspicious, please paste an Xorg log - the error isn't necessarily the cause of the failure.

did you check your pacman log to see what package it crashed while upgrading? might give you a hint on how to fix it

Re: [SOLVED] lost power during pacman -Syu now X server won't start

I had a similar issue...

PC has xfce4 and sway installed. Could not get X started with xfce4. Only error I got was "$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server". I tried sway and that worked. Tried xfce4 after that and that worked.

YMMV.

Re: [SOLVED] lost power during pacman -Syu now X server won't start

There are a few backup file warnings with pacman - Qkk:

backup file: xorg-xinit: /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (Modification time mismatch)                                      backup file: xorg-xinit: /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (Size mismatch)

Any chance these could be a problem?

It looks like like the power cut out here:

Re: [SOLVED] lost power during pacman -Syu now X server won't start

I'd like to go back to Seth's suggestion of running a full `pacman -Syu` again (from a chroot if needed).  He seems to suggest that you've already done so, but I don't see evidence of that in this thread.  You said you reinstalled xorg-server and plasma, but just do a full upgrade to be sure.

Especially if "uname -r" and "pacman -Qs linux" suggest that you're not running the installed kernel ;-)

Did a pacman - Syu again just in case. I did not see any errors.

uname -r returns
4.18.4-arch1-1-ARCH

pacman - Qs linux returns

linux 4.18.5.arch1-1 (base)

Re: [SOLVED] lost power during pacman -Syu now X server won't start

I wasn't expecting any errors from the upgrade, but I was hoping it might complete what may have been left incomplete.

Have you rebooted since the upgrade?

EDIT: please edit your last post to add code tags.  That log looks fine (edit: missed the error noted below), most notably:

[ 24.160] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

I did pacman -Syu from arch-chroot then from ssh.

Here is the pacman -Qkk output in pastebin

To fix the kernel version mismatch you need to explicitly install the kernel package `pacman -S linux` after ensuring /boot is mounted.
These packages will need installing after the filesystems have passed fsck.

Did a pacman - Syu again just in case. I did not see any errors.

mkinitcpio will also update your kernel if it didn't get made, however, if you didn't mount /boot, but there are files in your unmounted /boot, you can mount /boot to /mnt and just move the unmounted /boot files to /mnt and reboot.
This isn't Ubuntoo...your new kernel replaces the old...
X definitely won't start with the mismatched version modules (even if they're the same).

Re: [SOLVED] lost power during pacman -Syu now X server won't start

After reboot, both pacman -Qs and uname -r read

4.18.5-arch1-1-ARCH

When i reinstalled the kernel with pacman -S linux, I received some warnings about missing files

When i reinstalled the kernel with pacman -S linux, I received some warnings about missing files

My apologies, I had not reinstalled babl, bdf-unifont, fontconfig, iso-codes, mesa, polkit-qt5, and wayland. Now it works!

Despite the advice on the wiki, I had to install these via

 pacman -S --force ...

Two questions (I'm marking this as solved, but I am curious):

1- How did you know which packages to reinstall?

2- How can you use pacman --overwrite with lots of different dependencies?

Re: [SOLVED] lost power during pacman -Syu now X server won't start

In the pacman -Qkk output no mtree means the file that stores the metadata for each file and directory in the package is missing.
Without that data pacman can not check if package files have been altered and as you discovered pacman is no longer able to track files and directories belonging to that package.
So the packages needed to be reinstalled anyway to fix the pacman database and pacman -Qkk showed no issues with other packages.
I concluded those packages were part of the update that had not been written to the device successfully before power loss.
